I bet that was because it was late. I've had the same problem. The staff seem very keen to ensure that noone ends up at the wrong terminal and there being no or few flights departing causes them concern. In particular terminal 5 has rather few later flights, and quite few people connecting from other terminals, leaving lots of opportunity for staff to ask you questions.
