320kph headwind LHR BHD BA1420

had 320 kph headwind at 36000ft on ba 1420 this evening. It was relatively smooth considering. This is about double the highest that I’ve seen before. Anyone seen higher?

Just as well I wasn’t flying my aircraft up there which has a top speed of 195ktas albeit that’s only up to 25,000 ft. In those conditions I would have been flying backwards!

Noticed we had a 222 km/h tail wind from GLA with a few bumps on route yesterday evening (Friday).

Just curious but how long would you be flying at 36000 feet on such a short flight?

About 25 minutes at cruise (so between top of climb and top of descent). That's on a total flight time of 1 hr 7 mins.

EDIT: example vertical profile of a LHR-BHD flight, flying from right to left - obviously doesn't allow for ATC instructions which may alter the exact profile

Sounds like turbo charged something? I thought it might be an SR 22T but i think its cruising speed for that might be a bit higher...

I remember 300 km/h headwind on IB3474 MAD to ZRH, once upon a time. The captain said he (a) had taken twice the normal fuel, (b) was going at full throttle (i.e. about 600 km/h on ground, but (c ) couldn't help incurrimg a 45min delay despite departing 10min early ... It was like crawling against the stream

Good guess but no - it's an Extra 400. Had the great satisfaction a few months ago of queuing up for take off at Dusseldorf alongside a Speedbird A319 and fully expecting he would get priority but instead the tower lined me up first. I was ahead of him for only about a minute after take off mind you!

The strongest headwinds will usually be found from Tokyo to Hong Kong in February at the Height of the temperature gradient between Siberia and the Philippines.
