FWIW My Flights has just notified me (and the BA site confirms) that flight 189 (15.50 LHR-EWR Newark) on December 27 will now be operated by a 777 rather than a 789.

Some reading here on Trent / 787 issues - rapidly found so not all of these are necessarily linked to the problems that BA is having at the moment:-

So my BA95 LHR-YUL on 11.12 has been swapped from a 788 to a 789... Not sure if this is related? I guess so. The F cabin is not being sold, as I've read happens often with equipment swaps on 77s out of LGW. As there are more J seats on the 789 I doubt it will go out full so I assume F will remain closed, and given I no longer have any status I wouldn't be a candidate to be moved up anyway.

I was in 3K and have been moved to 13K... Not too happy about that. I paid to have a window seat forward of the wing, now I'm directly on the wing and right next to Y. There are no window seats left in the forward mini-cabin. I'm guessing if I ask for a refund for the seating change (I paid 70 quid for 3K FFS) I'll end up "unallocated" and have to pick at check-in? Should I act surprised on the day of flight and ask for a refund then?

Certainly would seem to be related, as they don't sell F on the YUL route to knowledge, so why run a 789 unless related to this issue?

You're certainly entitled to a refund at any rate. I don't know what will happen to your seat if you ask for one now, but given seating can be quite dynamic in the days up to flying, why not just wait anyway. If 3K opens up somehow, you should be put in it, if it doesn't you can apply for the refund after.

Appreciate your frustration. Mrs BertieB and I are on an LHR-YUL later this month, and I've got 3J/3K bagged for the BA94 return. Hopefully won't get swapped out, but I've got an EF alert set up on both legs, so if it does hopefully I can get in quick.

Air New Zealand have now grounded all B787-9's due to 2 aircraft returning to AKL after departure this week. Not sure if this is 100% related to the same engine issue but suspect it likely is. RR are said to be assisting.

if BA have more aircraft that will need to Trent 1000 modification, the back order for replacement blades is getting longer by the day.

My feeling is this problem could be around for a substantial period of time but certainly hope not.

Do you have a source for this? All I can see is reports that a number of flights have been cancelled, but that is no more than the last of the links which I gave above. Some of the articles I have seen use the word "grounded", but in a lurid sense when the bodies of the articles did not say that the entire fleet is being grounded.

Notably, one article - Air New Zealand Dreamliner Rolls-Royce engine problems cause cancellations - NZ Herald - contains this:-
Rolls-Royce told the airline that some of its engines on the Boeing 787-9 fleet will require maintenance sooner than previously advised and that it does not have any spare engines available while that work is undertaken.
A lack of spare engines could give quite a pointer as to why some aircraft simply cannot fly at the moment, and that in turn may be something that affects the 261/2004 compensation question.

The fleet tracker thread had originally scheduled G-BNLK as being retired in Nov’17, but it then went and spent a week in LHR maintenance so it’s quite possible they have pushed its retirement back to Q1 while the B787 issues are resolved.

It's worth bearing in mind that the November 2017 date was given a long time ago, and that by the time of Capital Markets Day, the 747 fleet figure for the end of 2017 was given as the current figure (36). It's impossible for an outsider to know whether or not the deferral from November 2017 was decided before Capital Markets Day because it was already known that the problems with the 787 fleet were going to get worse, but it is possible that other fleet / capacity considerations dictated it.

So my question is why did NZ ground their fleet and BA is still flying some 787-9 ? I ask because I am booked on one from SJC early next week

Could be all sorts of reasons, such as local fuel quality, age of the engines, types of service etc.

Am on BA1189 (LHR-EWR) on Dec 18, and it's still showing as the 789. I sure hope that doesn't change! That's why I am flying into EWR rather than JFK.
