New automatic push back

The relentless automation continues. From later this month all push backs from 501,502,503 will use the new Monotok automatic push back tugs. By Jan 2018 all T5A stands will have a dedicated machine.

Here's one in action...

Looks good. Impressive that something so small can push back an aircraft. But looks like it's remote controlled by a handler, in which case there's no apparent staff saving, right?

Looks fantastic. I am assuming this will reduce time waiting for tugs? (Albeit this has reduced over the last few years it must be said)

What an amazing robot that is. Thanks for posting. I think I would like to have one too, though I haven't worked out what I could use it for yet (reverse parking in Waitrose?).

Now, what could possibly go wrong?

At the moment there is a driver and a ground handler. No driver required so a saving of one.

No more waiting. At the moment they can only push back 319/320/321.

Once we get used to autonomous cars won't be long before they get rid of pilots (technology is all there ready and waiting). I wonder what we will all do with the time we will all have.

I have no doubt. But I think it'll be ok until my retirement. Much sooner will see the end of teachers, lawyers, accountants, traders... computers can do their tasks hugely more effectively and not make mistakes.

Automation at T5 will continue to advance until there are very few human staff at all.

I noticed we got pushed back by one of these last night (15th September) from gate A1. The process seemed to take a bit longer than usual but I guess it must have been one of it's first outings.

Seriously though, that's the way technology is now and anything that can be automated, make savings etc is the way it is nowadays.

Wow that is something impressive , and so small ! I for one would not be happy flying without a pilot , but this is something i wouldn't mind thou ! I do on a side note worry about all the jobs lost due to automation and the future "onslaught" of automation in the future within our job sector worldwide.
