Leaving airside at LGW
I did do a search here but can't find any information on this. Does anyone know the procedure for leaving airside at LGW South Terminal? Is it a lot of hassle?

Yes, it's more hasslesome than T5, though without conformance to worry about. You have to go to the GAL information desk on the lower departure lounge area (by the main shops in other words, opposite end from the BA lounges). There they will find someone to escort you downstairs to the arrival area and the UK Border. They will probably ask why you want to do this, but I don't think you need to tell them why. If a BA service is cancelled they tend to round up all the relevants in the lounge and a BA agent facilitates the egress from the building.

Just to add to that, we were once taken on a route of out there that avoided immigration and customs, where we came out in UK arrivals.
However it was a staff only chartered flight and there were no paying customers so there would of been no issues of connection immigration

A lesson from a family member's experience recently: Make sure you bring a passport, even if the flight that you're not going to take after all is a UK domestic. It significantly eases the process of getting out through immigration.
