As an up to date reference point for anyone querying in future, my 16 (nearly 17) yo daughter taking her first solo flight from the UK-US in J recently was able to get into the LGW lounge no hassles or being asked for age. I just told her to smile, and be friendly and confident 
She knows the drill though having been in that lounge plenty of times with me previously. If she had been asked, she would have said she just would like to sit quietly and have an orange juice and something to eat so could they please let her in....but if that didn't work would have said thanks and just gone back down to the main terminal.
