Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?
Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. The guide to using ITA matrix in post #4 (see here) along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or fewer
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seems the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520. Also the BA fare for LHR-HEL-TLL at ~£235 is still available and would get 200 TPs for a return.

Classic tier point run advice

Hi all, I was just wondering if anyone had any good advice on a last minute tier point run. I'm in London and am trying to manage 690 tier points before the 8th of Jan.

I was considering maybe a DUB-LHR-JFK-PHX-HNL-PHX-JFK-LHR-DUB run. Any better ideas?
Apologies if this isn't the best place to post this.

Thanks all,
J

I've just booked FRA - DOH - CMB - CGK and return for £1480.

I couldn't get it to book online on the UL website. It would price up through bookingwithmatrix however it wasn't clear if the fare rules would be the same as the ones quoted on Matrix (250 euro cancellation fee and I think 100 euro change fee) so I went through SriLankan phone reservations. First call they quoted me over £3500 euro. Second call they quoted me the correct amount, I 'reserved' it but they gave me 4 days to call back and pay. I was issued with a locator (which showed the reservation on the UL website). I called back yesterday to pay for it after I got a reminder e-mail. I have to say that the payment process was painful and ended up having to speak to a supervisor in Colombo after they said I'd have to call the FRA office to pay for some unknown reason. Anyway I now have e-ticket numbers.

I think the FRA - DOG legs may cause their system difficulty as they show up on EF as wait listed.

When I spoke to UL on the phone during the payment process they confirmed the fare rules to be what I expected and quoted the same code as I was expecting.

I chose CGK because it just qualifies for 140 TP from CMB and is an A330 route and offers a daily service form CMB. Be careful with the DOH to CMB leg as this is sometimes operated by an A320 without lie flat seats.

Hope that helps.

I've said it before in this thread, but the trick to booking the UL FRA-DOH-CMB-XXX fares, is to select Multi-City on the UL website.

Don't try it as a return from FRA-XXX as it throw an error, and report the wrong pricing.

Apologies for what I'm sure is a daft question (i have searched the glossary) but I cannot figure out what UL website stands for.

Jan short TP runs from DC

Hi All
Will likely be in DC in 2nd/3rd week of Jan for some business. Will fly BA to IAD, but then was wondering whilst there and have some free time, about maximizing TPs on AA with nested or multicity runs out of DCA. Need to book this soon, so any advise on best runs (esp B2B turnarounds) for max TPs per leg and low $/TP would be appreciated.
thanks

There are absolutely no daft questions on Flyertalk, so no need to apologise!

UL is the abbreviation for SriLankan Airlines, so I was advising that to book the FRA-DOH-CMB-XXX fares, one should select Multi-city on their website...which this alleviates the potential hassle of calling up by phone.

Is there any way to get tier points flying out of Cardiff or Bristol? My wife is going to be 30 TP short of silver and I think it's probably well worth a weekend break somewhere to grab it.

Can do Heathrow or Birmingham, but they're a chunk more effort.

Edit - Ahh, I just found the oneworld flight finder, and from what I can see, there's basically nothing from the regional airports until May. Guess it's Heathrow then.

BA codeshares from CWL to DUB (or did) but it's not especially cheap or lucrative for TP. I think a CE one way, ET from back would be less effort overall, unless you happen to live in Y Barri or Llanilltud Fawr anyway.

Yeah, there appear to be a number of good 20 TP ET options that you can get for next to nothing at the moment from Heathrow, so that'll work. Also considering Alicante in March for £110 CE from Gatwick... though not a great fan of getting to that one.

I'll have a look at BA's low priced flight finder for some other options.

Have you actually tried this lately? As I said before in this thread, I can't make it work. It does work for LCA-originating bookings, but not FRA.

I have tried booking this before and it worked up to payment page fine just the way described above - I wasn't buying it though so can't comment on payment success. @teledude recently bought one of these, he perhaps may shed some light?

As others have said, it does price up.
