Tesco and Avios

Tesco, the major UK supermarket chain, allows you to convert Tesco Clubcard (CC) points to Avios. The standard earning rate is 1 CC point per £1 spent in store. They convert to Avios in the ratio of 1 CC point to 2.4 Avios or 2.5 Virgin miles.

Every quarter, your points are converted to coupons and mailed to you - they can then be converted via the CC website to Avios or Virgin miles. Typically, it takes 1-2 working days for a conversion to BA Avios to complete.

The key to rapidly earning large amounts of Avios is the regular bonus point offers where large amounts of points can be earned. The latest are listed below and discussed within this thread.

The last period for collecting Clubcard points finished on 20 October 2016.

The last day for collecting points in the current quarter is 26 January 2017.

TopCashback (TCB)

Cashback can be transferred directly to your Avios account at rate of 1p = 1.05 Avios although this is not a great deal.

Very generous points deals:

150 points on £50 branded giftcards (excluding Tesco gift cards) - http://www.tesco.com/giftcard/branded-gift-cards.asp - ENDS 25/09/16

Averagely exciting points deals:

150 points on £5 spend on your first Tesco photo order http://www.tescophoto.com/home

Opportunities for FREE points:

Earn 25 points a month doing a customer survey (300 points a year) https://www.tescoviews.com/tesco/desktop/landing.do

Earn 100 points for giving your insurance renewal dates https://www.renewals.tescobank.com/

Up to 150 points per survey at Shoppers Thoughts https://www.shopperthoughts.com/signup

Recycle your printer cartridges and get 100 points (mixed feedback on this one) https://www.therecyclingfactory.com/tesco/

Everyday points opportunities at Tesco:

- Tesco credit card (discussed in the first post of this thread)
- Tesco instore and online shopping 1 point per £1 http://www.tesco.com/
- Tesco Direct 1 point per £1 http://www.tesco.com/direct/
- Tesco Fuel 1 point per £2 http://www.tescopfs.com/
- Tesco Mobile 1 point per £1 topped up http://www.tescomobile.com/
- Tesco Clothing F&F 1 point per £1 http://www.clothingattesco.com/

There are better uses of clubcard points imo, I prefer to use my vouchers at Pizza Express. I'd rather have £10 to spend at Pizza Express than 600 Avios.
One example - offer of 4000 clubcard points if you get Tesco Pet Insurance. That's just under 10k avios. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Then there's the free cashback you get from Topcashback. Bank switching for example. Convert the resulting £50 cashback into 5000 clubcard points. That converts to 12k avios. Again, sounds like a good deal to me.

Outside of weekends, get on the Pizza Express email list and you will be drowning in 2-4-1s etc which negate the Tesco voucher.

However, I do use my own CC points at Safestore. It is a genuine 3x value which means I would be effectively paying 1.25p per Avios if I paid Safestore cash and took Avios from Tesco - which is not good value.

I have young kids so Mon-Thurs Pizza Express 241s are useless.

I want to eat in Pizza Express on Sat or Sun afternoon. Given the dearth of discounts at weekends, using Tesco CC points is very, very good value.

I used to convert my Tesco CC points to Adios, but more devaluations means that for me, and I assume plenty others, using them at weekends in Pizza Express/Zizzi/Cafe Rouge etc. represents better value.

Different people find differing value in different things. What's the big deal? No one is being sarcastic...

Just so you know, Pizza Express regularly have offers which include the weekend, not just Mon-Thurs. In fact, theres an offer on there right now which is valid every day of the week, and another which is valid only on Sunday (http://www.pizzaexpress.com/latest-offers/).

Anyway, all this is quite OT - point is, sometimes CC->Avios is good value. Sometimes something like CC->Pizza Express is good value. Don't need to fight over it...

True, but the point is I like using the vouchers without worrying about what day of the week it is, and I only go on Friday-Sunday anyway.

Golden Condor seemed concerned that the Avios conversion rate might get cut because it is so generous. My point was that Avios conversion is far from the most generous use of Clubcard points (in my opinion anyway!). For some reason I still can't fathom, Tesco continue to allow some people to convert at 800 avios per £2.50 as well.
I'm hoping we will get another transfer bonus this year, which will persuade me to transfer some more over.

I read that recently but can't fathom how it's done.

I wanted to take part but didn't have any vouchers. Come December 2016, I will have plenty, and hopefully there will be a bonus!

Presumably using Pizza Express gift cards purchased at Tesco to pay the balance?

....from which, I gather you are not one of those people

Not so much "allowing" us to do it, more that 800 was the exchange rate when we joined this silliness, and Tesco has stuck to the agreement.

Wasn't it actually even better than that originally?

Nope. It was originally 400, and only 800 if your average Tesco spend over a 3-month period was greater than £60/week.

It then changed to 600 for all, except that if you had been an 800 receiver, you kept that rate.

Latest Bonus offering

Received this via email just now:

For every £5 in Tesco Clubcard vouchers you exchange for Avios between 1 February and 29 February 2016, you’ll receive one entry into a prize draw to win one of 25 prizes of 15,000 Avios – that could save you up to £100 off a return flight.

What’s more, for every £2.50 in Tesco Clubcard vouchers you exchange, you’ll collect 600 Avios.

If you automatically exchange your Clubcard points into Avios, then you’ll receive two entries for every 500 points exchanged.

Virgin are offering 20% bonus - can help but feel disappointed by the raffle prize they are offering, especially as I have earned 8500 this quarter

Wouldn't surprise me if it was just a reaction to the Virgin offer. Unfortunately a prize raffle doesn't tempt me.

Can I check I've understood this correctly? If I buy a £50 Tesco gift card I'll get 150 CC points; if I were then to spend that card in store on my normal shopping would I also get the CC points as per a normal shop? Or does paying by gift card negate the points? Thanks
