T5 Int-Int Connection/Duty Free question

I'm traveling ZRH-LHR-DFW in a couple of weeks. Given the UK liquids policy and security check, it appears I won't be able to carry any liquid I purchase duty free at ZRH to LHR. Would I be able to purchase a bottle of Pims or some such at LHR and carry it on to my LHR-DFW flight? Or does LHR (like some EU airports) have an additional liquids screening prior to boarding for US-bound flights? Thanks,

Andyandy

Hi,

If it is in a sealed bag ( ie sealed at the ZRH duty free shop) and the receipt is in the bag you should be able to carry it with you through LHR security.

Regards

TBS

PS You can also buy it at LHR.

I never quite understood the logic of confiscating tweezers at security but then allowing you onto the plane with litre bottles of flammable liquid made out of glass.

They won't let you board an internal flight with a bottle, sealed in a bag or otherwise but you will have an opportunity of putting it in your checked luggage. Just don't forget about it in your hand luggage like I did once...

I am not sure that's entirely correct. TBS' response is also my understanding of the rules. It needs to be sealed and receipt visible, then it can go in hand baggage, on its own or in checked baggage (you can check a bag in at Flight Connections, but not a bottle on its own, you'd need it to be suitably bagged up for going into the hold).

There are certain countries that are exempt. If you purchased your duty free liquid in a country not exempt, then they wont allow it through security even if it's in a sealed bag with a visible receipt inside. European countries, the USA (and a couple more countries (sorry I can't remember at the top of my head) are ok.

Well this one is a bit curious, I think it has silently changed. The Heathrow website used to say:

The items have been bought in the passenger-only zone at an airport in the European Union, Norway, Iceland or Switzerland, or on board an aircraft operated by an EU carrier or one from Norway, Iceland or Switzerland . The items must be packaged in a sealed tamper-proof bag provided by the airport/airline, inside of which is proof of purchase showing that the items were bought on the day of travel.
Or
The items have been bought in the passenger-only zone at one of the following airports: all international airports in Canada and the USA; Dubrovnik, Pula, Rijeka, Split, Zadar and Zagreb in Croatia; Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia; or Changi in Singapore. The items must be packaged in a sealed tamper-proof bag provided by the airport, inside of which is proof of purchase showing that the items were bought within the last 36 hours.
But it no longer does. In the same place it now says:

Duty free liquids, aerosols and gels purchased from any airport or airline may now be carried as hand baggage. However, these must be sealed at the time of purchase with the receipt inside a security tamper-evident bag. Following the initial x-ray scan, security officers may also need to carry out additional checks.

The liquids rules were relaxed on 31 January 2014 to allow transit passengers to carry their duty free purchases through security.

Excellent, thank you all for the information! I'll be taking along some pounds from my last trip trip to Blighty and using them at LHR. If I can tear myself away from the CCR, that is.
