A little Friday quiz

A short while ago someone (obviously a naive newbie ) suggested that the North Atlantic market was only a minor part of BA's business.

After spluttering coffee over my keyboard I decided to run a quick analysis of the data on http://www.thebasource.com/.

So, as it's Friday afternoon, here are a few BAFT pub quiz questions to wrap the brain cells around:

On the random day in January 2014 that I looked at ...

- how many US/Canadian gateways did BA serve ?
- how many flights were operated to the US and Canada?
- how many seats did they offer (in each direction) ?

Yes you could run the numbers too, but have a guess and see how close you are

No trick questions, no rules and no prizes, but hopefully interesting none the less.

- 25 gateways (assuming that 'gateway' means 'airport' and not 'city' (eg. JFK/EWR, IAD/BWI)
- 60 flights each way
- 21000 seats each way

Assuming only own metal (not including Openskies, AA codeshare, etc) I'd guess something like 27 destinations, 63 flights each way, 18,000 seats each way but I'll accept I may well be miles away!

I'm going to guess:

22 gateways
55 flights to the US and Canada (i.e. one way, as the question was phrased)
20,002 seats (to claim the territory above britishchris's guess )

So my view is...

22 Gateways - educated guess using my 'mental map' of North America.
48 flights - educated guess of which cities have lots and which have only a daily (or less) flight
16500 seats based on my estimated mix of aircraft types used for North America

PS I have assumed the 'random date' is a Wednesday and that they are all BA metal flights (no AA). Also assumed that we are only counting outbound flights from UK into USA or Canada.

On January 31:
22 gateways
45 flights (including 2 CWLCY, but without OpenSkies)
Between 11274 and 13152 seats in each direction

Is this a consulting interview question?!
