Upgrading Using Avios (UUA)
Summary guide to bookings which can be upgraded with Avios:
  • BA issued tickets (can include other carriers) ^
  • TA issued (on BA stock) booking with only BA flights ^
  • TA issued (on BA stock) booking with other carriers

  • Some TP runs can be booked online at aa.com. Be sure to use the Sort by schedule option in order to locate the exact flights you found on the ITA Matrix tool.

Yes, I do realise that. You need to be able to price it up first though before you can ring ba and read out flight numbers and dates to book it. You can price it up on itamatrix or you can do it on aa.com. You can book online at aa.com if you wish, but just to do searching to start with it can be easier to do on itamatrix.

I really hope that's so - and if it is so, that it sticks! It's one of the BMI routes I miss.

It is so and I echo both your sentiments.

I completely agree.

There are other places in the world and even that part of it where you're far less likely to encounter those type of difficulties. Even with a visa I'd be a little reluctant to embark on something of that nature involving transit through India. That's a pity because it would make a very welcome change for me from the standard west-heading runs.

Maybe I should be bit bolder.

After following the advice of this very knowledgeable forum, I've snagged a pretty nice CPH-HEL-LHR-IAD-LAX-HNL-LAX-JFK-LHR-HEL run for 1950€. This will net me 1250TPs, which is not that bad at 1,56€ per TP.

Why IAD you might ask? Well, I have yet to fly the A380 with BA and this seemed like the perfect opportunity for it. Wish there was UuA availability on F for the LHR-IAD leg, would certainly jump at the chance.

Booking the fare was rather simple as I called BA and they had no trouble booking this. Later I found out that I could have also booked it online at AA.com when selecting the closest flight times and the Schedule option with 50 flight results. Exactly the same price.

Post 4860 is the closest and mentioned the intra-Asia flights although the broader discussion was actually focused on some AY sale fares into DEL.

BA Tier Point runs | 2014 master thread

Hi pointtaken. I am doing an exCPH run to LAX in August and am going via IAD for the same reason as you - to go on an a380 which I still haven't done. Managed to UuA at the time of booking in to F fortunately.

Btw, you mentioned that you could book online at AA.com. Bear in mind that in order to be able to UuA your booking needs to be ticketed on BA stock so a 125- ticket. Had you booked at AA.com you wouldn't be able UuA any of the ba metal legs.

Seems ok from what you posted. What dates specifically are you looking at? For the end of March exDUB is 27 MAR 15 THROUGH 19 APR 15 and exCPH is 27 MAR THROUGH 12 APR.

As teledude has also noted exDUB is much cheaper. You can do via HEL from DUB although adding it out and back adds £200 to the fare and does take up lots of time and possibly involve more overnight stops (i.e. extra hotel costs). Therefore you may want to do exDUB to HNL for ~£1380 for 1340 TPs and get the other 160 with a quick weekend trip to one of the shorthaul+ destinations at some other time (HEL, RAK, MLA etc.).

Ex dub late March or early April would work with a 1 or 2 night stay. Is the routing DUB - LHR // LCY - JFK - PHX - HNL and same return?

DUB - LCY - JFK - PHX - HNL outbound and the reverse on return or JFK-LCY/LHR-DUB if you want to go via LHR. There is an early morning DUB-LCY service which will get you in at 0830 and allow you to connect on to BA1 at 0945. If you are doing the DUB-LON bit the day before then either in to LHR or LCY whichever is more convenient for you.

Not much of a TP run, but it'll get me to Silver, even though I don't really need it until July when my Marco Polo Gold Card expires.

However, I really fancied going back to Florida and January seemed like a great time to do that.

So I've booked a DUB - LHR - MIA - LHR - LGW - DUB in January. Outbound on a BA 747 (upper deck) and inbound on an AA 77W. £998 + credit card fee. Last leg is with AerLingus in Economy. I could've built in some stopovers, but I preferred maximising comfort and time in Miami. :-) 10-16 Jan.

It took some time before the BA rep managed to get the right quote. At one point she said: "You can't get a business class ticket for less than £1000", and "you can't combine and AerLingus flight and get a good price". I'm hoping I can make it for the LGW - DUB, but please don't kill me if I don't!

What was her comment when you clearly proved her wrong?

My experience booking exEUs has been with the gold and ggl line and both have been very helpful ( I guess as you would expect). Once they realise I have a clue what I am doing then it also goes quite well, usually we discuss booking classes and fare codes! When they have not initially managed to get it priced up at the low fare they have obliged in spotting the problem and sorting it out, and we have always got there in the end.

I always tend to say I have got it priced up on aa.com to signify this is a bookable itinerary - I guess if you have it priced up on itamatrix and as that is not a booking engine it may not carry quite the weight if the BA agent incorrectly says the fare isn't available.
