Hanoi (HAN) award availability?

I would like to reserve an award flight to Hanoi, preferably on QR828 via BKK to avoid backtracking on CX via HKG or MH via KUl. However, Hanoi does not seem to be loaded in the BA system, and QR828 DOH-BKK sector also fails to show any availability despite being good on the other 3 daily DOH-BKK flights. Why is this DOH-BKK-HAN route not loaded in system? IME this is first time I have found a valid flight not to be loaded; is this common, and am I likely to get round this issue if I call BA direct?

You will have to call BA to book Hanoi as it's not recognised on BA.com.

I could sometimes force it show availability on the HAN-HKG, but I had to pay the offline fee when I called to book it. You can check availability for the HKG-HAN route on the Dragonair website but I had to set up a Asia miles account beforehand.

Thanks, does the Asia Miles site show Qatar availability? If so I will set one up and if not just try calling BA or AA to check my luck.

There is Award Availability on that route, but HAN is not supported by BA.com -- you need to call BA EC to book:

Why anyone would want to go to Hanoi other than to try and get an early death from pollution or crossing the street is beyond me

Thanks for this, what I actually want to book is EDI-DOH-BKK with Qatar during last week of October. I would like DOH-BKK sector on QR628 but it is the flight that continues to HAN so I am guessing that is why it does not show on BA or ot might be there is simply no availability. Later I will want a HAN-BKK sector on Qatar but it is too early to check that one yet.

Just flew from DOH - SGN. Decent experience

From HAN you'd be on a 777 - even better (A330 are angled, not flat in J)

Do some checking on Hanoi it really is a pretty awful place to be honest, very dirty and run down, pollution as good as Shanghai, rip offs everywhere and pay big attention as to where you might use an ATM or god forbid you get in a taxi without agreeing the price.

It's easy to be ripped off anywhere in the world without using some common sense. Bangkok has just as many rip-off taxi and tuk tuk drivers, yet is a possible tourist hot spot.

I was in Hanoi a few months ago and found it to be a buzzy, atmospheric place. It's certainly not the clean, calm that somewhere like SIN offers and it's not particularly well catered for the Luxury Break brigade but feels authentic.

Crossing the road isn't nearly as dangerous as it looks or seems first time around. Walk slowly, at a constant pace without stopping or going back and the traffic magically weaves around you. Panic, and stop or run back and it confuses the heck out of everyone and causes accidents.

ATM's we found were fine. No fraudulent activity detected from us and used cash from ATM's and credit cards for Hotels/Restaurants.

Lots of quality Linen to be had, great for womens tailoring but found the quality of the mens to be lacking. Cashmere and Silk all good value too.

Fun for a few days, but it's a small place and any longer is likely to feel a bit samey.

Ultimately, it depends what you're there for... Just as long as it's not Michelin-starred restaurants or luxuriating in world renowned hotels you'll be just fine.

+1 for Hanoi! It's busy, crazy, different, I loved it! Excellent starting point for day trips and excursions as well.

Thanks for your advice and concern folks. We should be fine as will be using a tour guide we used in Saigon who was fantastic. I have travelled widely in Asian and other countries and am fsmiliar with the challenges.

Unfortunately I am unable to find any availability on QR828 DOH-BKK so looks like I will have to go lonv way round on MH.
