T5 In & Out Security (YYZ-LHR-BCN)

Hi There

I will be arriving at T5 tomorrow morning and I have a 9hr layover in LHR. As a Silver BA member I'm traveling world travel so I don't have access to the Arrivals lounges. However, because I am transiting through to BCN later tomorrow night - I know i can walk through to the Galleries lounges in T5 and use the showers and had coffee but is it possible for me to then leave Terminal 5 to go into london for the day and come back?

So questions - Can I proceed through the arrivals security for Connecting Passengers - go to T5 departures lounge (because i have my connection pass) and then leave the Departures Security areas and come back later that day?

Anyone done this?

Thanks

To leave airside you will need to contact the BA customer service desk in the departure lounge, provide a reason for leaving, and then BAA security will escort you out through to landside.

So yes, you can do this, but you can't just walk out.

Rumour hath it that such a manoeuver requires you to undergo a degree of 3rd degreee interrogation, as to why you need to leave T%.

I can also see some interaction with BA to off load you from your onward flight to BCN and also to offload any checked baggage!

In my 2 experiences of leaving T5 airside, all I had to say is that I no longer wanted to travel.

On both occasions, it was a BA (not BAA) employee that took me landside.

I guess it more or less depends on whether you have checked luggage. If so, then BA would take a dim view unless you collected it and re-checked in later. In fact, that might be your best option. Don't check it through and then place it in Left Luggage at T5. Cost (according to the LHR website) is £8.50. Then, when you return from London, pick up your bag from Left Luggage, take it upstairs to bag drop and then go through security as normal.

Why would BA offload the OP and his luggage from the flight? People leave airside all the time between flights to go to hotels, restaurants, into the city. Why would it be a problem for the OP?

Hi,

The OP's plan is to go airside first through flight connections( to use the showers in the departure lounge) and then go landside into town rather than the normal transit option of going landside, spending the day in the city and then reclearing security.

Some hotels offer a day pass to use the gym which would offer showers ie the LHR T4 Hilton ( not sure about the Sofitel at T5)

Regards
