iPad 3/HD @ T5?

I am flying out of T5 tonight and wondered if anyone has seen the new iPad at any of the retail outlets airside?
I guess the merits of the device have probably already been discussed elsewhere and I have already decided to upgrade my iPad 2 as I can pass that on to my son.
I am after the 64gb with WiFi and 4g capability.

Many thanks

Hello.

This ipad is available at Terminal 5.... I bought one there myself (without queuing!) on 16 March.

It has been discovered the new ipad will not work correctly on the UK 4G network and many other countries in Europe as the frequency is wrong and only set for USA 700mhz and 1.2 Ghz frequencies.

The adapter in the iPad can't recieve the 4G signal that will be used here. The new iPad can pick up 4G LTE at 700MHz and 2100MHz, while 4G in the UK will work at 900MHz and 1800MHz.

Put simply, the new iPad and the proposed 4G LTE networks in the UK won't be compatible.

and also..... Dont buy one in the USA and think you can use it in UK as it still wont work

If you are going to buy one, just buy a Wifi one and wait until the UK phone providers do one on a contract after they have trialled it.

Here is Dixons T5 phone number and they can put one by for you / pre order it for collection 0208 897 5820

The UK 4G issue is a bit of a red herring. The UK doesn't have any 4G networks yet, and by the time they are widespread the iPad 6 will probably be on the shelves.

What he said, but the ipad 3 will still work on our 3G networks. I bought mine in Las Vegas and it works perfectly here

What's the price in the UK? They are somewhat cheaper in the US I believe so if travelling to the US maybe worth picking it up there.

FWIW, if you were thinking of activating it as soon as you had bought it, you need either a connection to iTunes or a wifi signal. And some time.

Interested to know how much they cost as ive always found Dixons Travel to be the cheapest place for electronics. Bought my Mac Book there for £130 less than the Mac Store. Looking to buy a new iPad myself, flying out of T1 this weekend. Will be in the US next week, so will be good to compare prices.

If you are buying it for a company, phone their biz team and get an account manager. Then you get 5-10% off everything.

You could get one in JER, combined with a TP run. GST only 5% instead of UK's 20%

iQ takes Amex, of course. Sadly no stock just now - still waiting for my pre-ordered to arrive.

Fly to the States

Way overpriced (on both continents)

Since I was in the US on the 16th, I preordered one on a spontaneous brain outage... Meant to return it but tried to make a local ebayer happy who clicked the buy it now button, to now ignore my phone calls and messages... While ebay already billed their fees. Gee, thanks.

Anyway, happened to take a picture of the Pricelist at Dixons on Sunday so long story short:

Wi-Fi 16GB:
US: $499 DE: €479 UK:£399 T5:£387.38
Wi-Fi 32GB:
US: $599 DE: €579 UK:£479 T5:£465.05
Wi-Fi 64GB
US: $699 DE: €679 UK:£559 T5:£542.72
4G 16 GB:
US: $629 DE: €599 UK:£499 T5:£484.47
4G 32GB:
US: $729 DE: €699 UK:£579 T5:£562.14
4G 64GB:

It's not just that. There are 4G (LTE) Networks in various European Countries by now, but they use a different frequency, which the iPad doesn't support (Similar to the fact that most European Phones won't be able to pick up T-Mobile US's 3G Network). Doesn't matter though IMHO. HSDPA with up to 14+ MBit is supported and I have yet to see the business case for getting 50 or 100 MBit on a Tablet...

Yes, but unless you are Warren Buffett 4G roaming in Europe would be an expensive proposition...

Indeed, but not everyone here is from UK, so the fact that we have LTE readily available in Germany, Poland and other places may still be relevant.

...including the comment that it won't be supported by the iPad (3), which shouldn't stop you from buying it, since you are unlikely to get it for 4G. If you have a good 3G Network (whereever you may be), it'll be fast enough. Unless if you're on T-Mobile US as mentioned before, then you're SOL as the iPad will only support 2.5G (Edge), but that should affect the minority in this forum.

Think I'll get one in the US in June for £315, happy to wait to save 65 quid or so, I assume by then they'll be no stock issues

<Way OT>Actually, OFCOM, who finally woke up and realised Britain was starting to look a bit backward have mooted allowing Everything Everywhere (the ------d child of the marriage of Orange and T-Mobile) to use some of their 1800 frequency for 4G later this year. Obviously, this is not one of the pre-existing frequency ranges used by 4G in other countries but we should expect dongles (and personal hotspots) to hit the shelves soon(ish) if this happens.

Personally, I wouldn't have a 3G or 4G iPad. They use idiotic mini SIMs and I can't get hold of these in many of the places I visit (personal hotspot makes more sense). </Way OT>
