AA cancelled flight & award booking made on BA

Hello
I made award reservations via BA on AA from DFW to Mazatlan (in Oct of last year) for June 2012. I logged onto my ba account yesterday and found out AA had cancelled those flights. I called BA and the agent told me that AA now flies to Mazatlan only on Saturdays. My original departure was Friday. She attempted to rebook me but then said that the Saturday flight was sold out. I asked what were my options and she said only a refund of my miles and taxes. I looked on AA today and that Saturday flight is not sold out. If you have any advice, please let me know. Thank you!

This question is probably more appropriate for the BA board. The person you spoke with was either incompetent or lying to you. I assume there is no award availability on that flight, but still seats for sale. You'll have to ask those more familiar with BA, but if this were happening in the reverse I would call AA and ask to speak to a supervisor if not rebooked on the Saturday flight. BA should be able to rebook you on the Saturday flight, but it may require a supervisor contacting the AA liason.

As this trip was booked with Avios / BAEC, questions about it are better asked on the BAEC Forum, where members will undoubtedly be better informed about what to do next. /Moderator

I'm guessing you spoke to the US BAEC. I've heard bad things about them.

Call back, ask for a supervisor and ask them to rebook you on the Saturday flight, which clearly has availability. Be nice about it, but don't take no for an answer.

Or telling the truth.

There might not have been any award seats available on the flight in question even though AA showed them as being available.

Yes the OP should phone again and ask to speak to a supervisor. AA will have to open up an award seat for the OP to be rebooked into. If they don't then a refund is due or rebooked on another date when there are award seats available.

Have you tried calling AA to see if they will change the ticket to Saturday for you? In other words, do you still have a ticket? If so, maybe the airline that cancelled the flight can help you sort it out. If AA sends you back to BA, then the advice given above is good but maybe AA can change it for you as the operating carrier.

Do you understand the difference between sold out and no award space available?

In this case pax can be rebooked even if no award seats are open.
"Sold out" literally means every seat on the plane has been sold.

You can be sold out in a given fare bucket, including award space.

You can also have situations where more seats are released later due to change in cicumstances - bookings canceled/changed, people moved onto other services, etc.

Also keep in mind availability can vary by location. It could be that in the system person A is using from X, there is nothing available, but person B using system Y is seeing 1 seat remaining etc.

If the flight was within 2 weeks, I believe BA would re-book the ticket into a revenue bucket if no award seats were available. However, given its further away, they will just offer a refund.

I booked an award ticket on IB for next week which was cancelled due to the pilots strike. BA have re-routed onto the direct BA flight even though there were no award seats available and Y was nearly sold out (Y4, B0, M0).

That's pretty much it. If it were a BA operated flight BA could have shown some goodwill and rebooked into a revenue fare bucket. However, since it is an AA flight and the departure is not within 2 weeks a refund is the only option if no award seats are available. Only AA can do something in this situation but it probably won't touch a BA issued ticket.

There really is no need to use that tone. It reminds me of old snotty Hargreaves......my English teacher at school.

I can well imagine a US based agent using the term "sold out" when finding all award space gone on a certain flight gone.

US based? These words sound snotty to me.

Thanks for all of your advice. I really appreciate your help!
I am going to try to talk to the BA supervisor 1st.
I don't need or want any other date than the Saturday flight (the day after the original flight) since we are meeting family there for a family reunion.
