Yes but they can skirt this law by manning the bar or at least minding it. This was the case when I flew AA from JFK to LHR several months ago. I know this isn't their fault but I think they could at least be more accommodating seeing as those above the age of 12 are paying full fare (and those between the ages of 18-20, like myself, are considered adults in the eyes of the law) but are not allowed their, entitled, access to the lounge. If AA can do it...

Maybe in China it is deemed to be a great honour.

When you put it like that (nice, rational, no emotion or insults ) you have a point. I do not like the AA lounge concept much with the bar that is attended and having to wait for everything though. Guess BA made a choice there that may alienate some but please most.

Does this mean children aren't allowed into the lounge then?

Only under parental supervision. If the OP was traveling with his parents there would not have been a problem. Not sure if he would be allowed into the lounge if he was to be escorted by an adult who isn't related. If he is, there is the loophole.

They looked at their customers and thought most would be business or leisure over 21+ . They knew they could help themselves and be quick about it. Also BA likes to push the help yourself kitchens onboard. So if you can do it on the plane, why not in the lounge.

I asked the dragon whether or not this was because the bar was not attended and she said that she thought that was the reason. This is utterly ridiculous. Is there no possible way that they could assign someone to "mind" the bar or give them the nominal role of bartender? So I am currently sitting in the foyer, no access to the amenities apart from the wifi; brilliant.
Three alternatives under NY law: 1) bartender w. liquor behind the bar and dispensed by the ID-checking bartender; 2) nobody under 21 admitted alone; 3) no liquor available. Must be that liquor inspectors finally cottoned on.

I've used "Lounge Angels" in the past to describe the pleasant ones. I also considered "Lounge Fairies" (since they grant the wish of entry) but I though that might be taken the wrong way...

In Ghostbuster, didn't they have Gate Keepers? That's wouldn't be a bad turn of phrase for them... "I am the Gate Keeper"

I too agree not being allowed in sucks. BIG time.

Apologies if I was a tad rash earlier, I have not slept in 30 hours and the prospect of no wifi, or at least more than 20 minutes of it/lounge for 3 hours before the flight was quite angering. Yes I am not a fan of the AA lounge in that respect but I suppose I am now a fan of it on the whole as I can at least get past the door!

No problem. Have you thought about finding an 'adult' (in the NY state sense of the word) who can escort you into the lounge? Is Paul over 21?

I believe it means that all those under 21 must be accompanied by someone 21 or older.

I did think of this, but I was early and the morning BA flights were just departing to the lounge was emptying before my eyes! Paul is over 21 and did escort me around the lounge so in that respect I was given access but the idea of being escorted around a lounge at my age is... troublingly odd.
