Is that an Escape Hatch?

On the port hand side, above the cockpit, on the 747.

Yes. They use it to fly flags as well when on the ground.

Yup...

I think I am correct in saying, it is some sort of zip wire type affair to then get down to ground level, as in on some sort of tension spool contraption or something.... Unlike the Airbus, where they climb out of the window and slide down the Ball Breaker...

That's right, there are several inertia reels. It looks like a pretty hairy procedure! There is a video on YouTube.

Climb out escape hatch, hold inertia reel with two hands at shoulder level close to your body, keep your back touching the fuselage, and away you go!!!

Not sure which is worse, this or the upper deck slides...
