Angry Frustrations booking Vancouver to Asia with Avios

Looking to book December flights to Asia from Vancouver using Avios. I'm trying to get to Phnom Penh but thought it easier to book one leg at a time, Van to Hong Kong or Van to Narita. The BA site keeps routing me via London. Is there a trick to booking a non-stop partner flights from Van on the site? The BA site offers "find availability with British Airways on other dates" but, again, only offers flights via London. Once there, it links me to Cathay. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to FlyerTalk!

I would start by using another airline's website to search for award space. Neither AA nor AS requires a log-in to search for award space. A quick search on the AA app shows some early December dates with two-stop availability in Economy only from YVR to PNH, but it utilizes both JL and QR on the itinerary. This would trigger BA's multi-carrier redemption rate, unless you were to book each leg separately (perhaps stopping over for a day or two en route?)

If searching on AA just for YVR-TYO, any itinerary involving JL will price at exactly 35,000 miles. Any date showing a higher redemption rate would be for connecting travel on AA, so ignore those dates.

The CX flights are often full with revenue, so CX revenue management might not see the need to release any award seats. If you want to find which days have availability, you can find airports that are only served by CX and JL to force availability. Examples include CTS, NGO, or FOC. I'd suggest finding the individual flights and then calling up to book, complicated itineraries (even mixed carriers) often get the best of the online system...

CX J avaialbility has been reduced significantly over the last few months, I rarely see it available nowadays, and Christmas will be even harder to find.
