Then I went to the El Al site and found a flight to Luton on 12 May. I booked it.

So now I am out of pocket for that, plus BA won't refund my return fare, which was mostly Avios, but I'd still like them back if I can't get BA to pay for the flight they should have rebooked me on. What's my best course of action here? How can I avoid an AI-fuelled auto-reject to my compensation request?

I do have travel insurance but they insist I do whatever I can to reclaim from the airline first, which is fair enough.

TIA.
Sounds like you accepted the 15 May flight. If you had left the cancelled flight on the account, rather than accepting the new flight there may have been more options for you, including a refund of the Avios. BA may also argue that they were trying to fly you to GLA rather than Luton. You may end up with a good result if the 15 May flight is also cancelled, time will tell.

Best to check here before agreeing to that sort of rebooking. However if the original booking was within 24 hours of departure then the agent should have used IATA regulations to find another route, and LTN looks odd on the system and the easyJet won't be bookable by BA in any event. So you would be advised to leave the original booking as is, and then claim rerouting as per EC261/APR and the Israeli variants on a reimbursement basis. Having agreed to a rebook you are now out of scope for EC261 in a narrow sense, but there again you can argue you were misadvised on the LTN / U2 issues, and if that got to MCOL or CEDR your case may be entertained. Now as it happens there is a good chance 15 May will get cancelled so you can get a refund for that at least and then it's over to insurance, if that is within scope of insurance.

I have an award flight in J from LHR-TLV out 19th May and back 27th.

Spoken to the Gold line and been told that they have a notice on the flight until the end of June that people can cancel or be rebooked to Athens or Larnaca and then have to make their own way.

No rerouting to El Al due to no interline agreement at this point but subject to change, which seems to contradict the below?

Im going to hold out another week or so on the basis that an El Al option becomes available, or they reinstate the route.

But if I do decide to take the option of getting myself to Israel from Athens or Larnaca, can I get reimbursement for that additional flight and any expenses? Alternatively, if I dont cancel but make my own booking on El Al from LHR in J, will be BA be obliged to refund me for it?

Thanks!

Things may well change in a few days, BA isn't fast in this sort of scenario. But if the current situation stays, then you should ideally ring up and tell them specifically what you want to do, in terms of re-routing and ask BA to do this. It has to be a viable option - so seats available in the same cabin or in a lower cabin. If BA declines, and provides no alternative then you are best to leave the booking as is, and do not refund the booking. Then after all travel is complete put in for a refund of any excess spend. If LCA or ATH provides a viable way forward, then that is OK to accept that routing provided you identify a viable onward connection and then ask BA to book you on to that service. If the agent says "you are responsible for any additional expenses", make sure you say "I disagree with that, kindly add that remark to the booking". It doesn't hugely matter since under Article 15 BA cannot take away your rights for you, and under Article 8 you have a straightforward right to re-routing.

Reports in the press here in Israel (where I am currently) say that BA have "made the decision to suspend our flights to and from Tel Aviv, up to and including 14 June"

I have a flight from Tel Aviv to London on 21st May that is not yet showing cancelled but I expect I will get notification soon and I am assuming I will be re-booked onto El Al given past experience. Will advise what happens when the cancellation comes through and once I have called.

Reports in The Times of Israel that BA have emailed statements confirming suspension through to June 14th.

Was on phone with BA re something else and asked about TLV, as I have a flight on 10th June. The agent said that internal comms confirmed suspension until 14th May but given that its not possible to book for dates after that this will likely be extended. Their supervisor said they are hoping to get an EL AL rebooking deal in place in the next 24-48hrs.

Question: my flight is a one-way Avios booking in Club. Based on past experience, would BA rebook me onto EL AL (Virgin did that for me last year on an award ticket too)?

JFKLHRTLV: Book on AA Stock to Avoid BA TLV Cancellations? (PE, 7 Pax)

Looking for advice before pulling the trigger on JFK–LHR–TLV tickets for a small group.

Given the current instability and BA’s past track record of suspending TLV service, I’m wondering:
Would it be smarter to book the itinerary on American Airlines stock, even if the flights are BA-operated?

I had a past situation with Iberia where I was on IB stock, and another passenger on the same flight had an AA-issued ticket. When things got messy, AA stepped in and rebooked their customer—while I was left dealing with Iberia’s much slower process. Huge difference.

So the real question is:
If TLV flights get pulled or delayed which airline's stock —AA or BA—is more likely to get us properly rebooked (preferably on LY)?

Would love insights from anyone with experience or knowledge of how AA vs. BA handles rerouting, especially for premium economy pax during disruptions.

My 21st May flight has now formally been cancelled and speaking to the GGL line the agent confirmed they can re-book onto El Al direct between London and Tel Aviv now. He says this policy is very new as he read the email while we were speaking.

So I have moved from an A321 in Club Europe to a flat bed Dreamliner which is a result in my book

Same here, although had to accept a change of day, as BA can only rebook business to EL ALs D, J and Z classes.

Any tips on how to select a seat? The EL AL app recognises the BA booking reference up until the point of asking to pick a seat, when it says the booking cant be found

Without fail my BA bookings moved to El Al cannot be managed at all until on-line check-in opens. The app recognises the booking but when you click to change/view anything the system says the reference is not recognised (the original BA reference stays in the booking).

I've found that calling El Al normally works although I've had varying levels of "grumpiness" about helping me for something so trivial. Understandable of course when people are perhaps stuck somewhere and I am just wanting a specific seat.!!

Previously the best advice seems to have been to use WhatsApp - as per El Al's contact website - to get seats arranged.

My avios flights in early June have just been cancelled, can I ask for rerouting on El Al and, crucially, will they keep the flexibility of avios re cancellation and refund?

You can (I just did - my flight was an Avios booking). I got rebooked onto EL AL no problem (as long as they have seats in specific fare classes).
the agent told me that the same conditions re cancellations and changes apply as per Avios booking - I hope thats the case!
