It is literally a brick, doing nothing, unless it's redrawing its screen. So "off" is exactly the same as "displaying a page of a book". Though mine goes to a picture of an old writer.signol

As I have never felt the need to download a book whilst in the middle of the Kalahari desert, I bought the simple one that uses Bluetooth to my computer for downloads.
