GRU inter-terminal transfer need a visa? Help!

I am flying from SJO to ASU via Panama City and Sao Paulo. My flight into Sao Paulo is on Copa, and my flight to Asuncion is on TAM. I confirmed that they have an agreement that allows luggage to be through checked to Asuncion. However, the airlines are located in two separate terminals at GRU. I have read a lot of people mentioning that if you stay in the transfer lounge and avoid immigrations, you should be fine. But are you able to get from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 from the transfer lounge?? I realize that the second I step outside of the terminal, all is lost. Is my Paraguayan visa and onward ticket enough to get me through unscathed?

What passport do you hold? Are you sure you need a Brazilian visa?

transfer

there is a walkway betweeen terminals at GRU, within security, so no need to clear customs/immigration.

I have a US passport, so yes, if I went through immigrations I would need a visa. Reciprocity! If I am able to walk between the terminals behind security, then I'm good to go.
