Pls tell my friend that he's nuts if ...

My friend wants to redeem his BD miles for hotel vouchers in Paris in the height of the summer holidays. He has less than 120K miles.

I told him that he's nuts to use 6000 miles for a 10 Quid voucher!

But if he reads it here from some of you guys, maybe he will believe me.

If it wasn't for the fact that I've got everything booked up for the next year and the M&M transfer is looming after that, I'd happily have offered him £1,000 for his miles and I'd be still laughing at his stupidity after we'd shaken hands on it.

If he uses 120,000 miles on hotel vouchers, he can get 20 £10 vouchers, the princely value of £200.

Or, he can get 3 x round trip C&M redemptions in business (or almost two in First) Z1-Z3, Z1-Z6, etc, the princely value of a few thousand pounds.

He's definitely nuts!!

Show him

He is nuts.

Perhaps you can show him what he can do with 120k miles. I managed to convert a fellow misguided friend by illustrating the value of miles in terms of an F ticket.

Dear friend.

You are certifiable and need to listen to the wise advice or Mr Betsy. However if you don't wish to take our collective advice and would like the vouchers for a hotel, I will happily redeem a night or two above and beyond the value of the vouchers at a Starwood hotel of your choosing in exchange for a bmi redemption

Seriously though, don't do it. Use the miles for what they are good for - flying.

I am sure that you are all aware that, under the FT Rules and Guidelines, any on-thread offers to relieve the OPs misguided friend of his/her miles are strictly verboten, and transgressors may be given "the finger".

[/mod]

and one more point for your friend : the hotel vouchers are issued in pounds sterling, so are worth diddly squat when converted into Euros to pay for a Paris hotel....

In which case I'll offer you a GUV, a bmi 2009 calendar and a Manchester Hard Rock Cafe pin for "the finger" and your silence on the matter

In any case, I don't need any more DC miles as I have a pile of my own I need to redeem at some point. I may swap them for car hire vouchers!

OMG. I cannot believe that there are still people in this world who think that spending miles on hotels is a worthwhile exercise, especially if they are mad enough to do it in euros.

I suggest that you point your friend in the direction of a few F trip reports to let him know what he's missing.

Otherwise, drag him off to the nearest lunatic asylum and throw away the key

No, I emptied the wife's account for those, not mine.

Madness indeed. But it falls down to that age old question "how much is a mile worth to you?"

In your friends case, I'd suggest he'd wander over to the Coupon Connection if he has enough posts...
