Word of advice martin_d. When you ask for help about availability, routings and mention tax quotes, it's best you give all the details at the start to avoid confusion.

The cheapest fare EDI-ZRH fare (on BD) looks to be £79, so not really worth going on a separate ticket just to save £21. IMO better to get the protection against mis-connection, particularly at that time of year.

The cost/hassle of making your way from GLA-EDI must be outweighed by the need to take one less flight each way and avoid the need to connect through LHR.

It looks like it only runs MON-SAT-SUN EDI-ZRH and MON-FRI-SUN on the return, but that works for your dates....

So by going from Edinburgh direct to Zurich, I only save £21? Why couldn't I book it all on the same ticket, would that not save me more in tax as there will be less flights?

Sorry for the confusion - going EDI-ZRH-GRU on one ticket would only be £21 more expensive than a EDI-ZRH paid ticket then the taxes on ZRH-GRU. There is more tax with a through ticket as you get hit by Air Passenger Duty for a 1st class flight to Brazil, rather than an economy ticket to Europe.

Going EDI-ZRH-GRU should be cheaper in tax than GLA-LHR-ZRH-GRU, yes.

ah right thanks. Much prefer to by-pass LHR and Edinburgh is no hassle for me. Cheers to everyone for their help ^

Sorry, you're mixing up a couple of different issues here.

At present, you're looking at GLA-LHR-ZRH-GRU and return, all on one ticket. I'm initially saying that you could instead do EDI-ZRH-GRU and return. Again, all on one ticket. This might save you the odd couple of pounds each from taking one less flight, but that's all.

raikje's point is that if you bought a separate ticket EDI-ZRH (rather than having it as part of your award booking) and then started your award in ZRH, you would no longer suffer the £100 per person UK APD tax. However, to buy a separate ticket EDI-ZRH would cost £79 each, thereby saving each person £21. If you were to do this, you would have no protection if there was a problem with your EDI-ZRH flight, causing you to miss the connection in ZRH, as the ZRH-GRU flight would be on a completely separate ticket.

So, the recommendation to go EDI-ZRH-GRU rather than GLA-LHR-ZRH-GRU saves time and effort, but doesn't save anything in terms of cost.

Edited to add: Looks like I type too slowly!

Hmmm - ITA seems to price up at £300 for me for a random date in Jan 2010, but it gets to APD wrong - charges correctly for Band C, but at the lower rate of £50. Though it is the end of the day and my brain is running a little slowly...

YQ on redemptions

I understand to use IATA for finding out the taxes and fees but I have seen references in other threads that particular routes and or carriers dont have the YQ surcharge added on a redemption.

Is there some sort of master list or rule of thumb as to which ones will incur the YQ surcharge?

first time poster looking to redeem flights to Sydney

Hi everybody, wow what a website. I've read the FAQ's and been on the ANA site but looking for a bit of reassurance before I phone to try and book my tickets.

Trying to fly from LHR to SYD on 30/11 returning 06/01 dates are flexable by couple of days either way.

Thought I had enough miles to fly business one way, first the other. My naive plan involved phoning and asking, that didn't work out so well as I was told only economy available, hence the google search, and ending up here.

After a few hours of clicking the plan is now
30/11 LHR - BKK TG 917 Business
01/12 BKK - SYD TG 995 Business

07/01 SYD - SFO UA870 Business
07/01 SFO - ORD UA886 Business
07/01 ORD - LHR UA938 First

So, is it possible and does it make sense, I've worked it out at 87,500 miles and £595 plus taxes, of which I have no idea what they will cost ???

Any help, suggestions warmly received.
Thanks, Neil
