Avios? Only taxes?

I am not yet familiar with the whole BA thing but I leanred already that one needs first to have one point in BA and then do the transfer. So I already moved one point from SPG to BA. From now on, the BA miles have no expiration date, as long as I have every once in a while a move, right?

BA allows me to book from Europe to UK (including a transfer in UK) for 27 £ taxes. ^

But what about this Avios thing? What is this? When I want to book with BA from Europe to Europe it charges me the full amount of taxes

Error or secret way of booking cheap awards?

And I think I red somewhere that one can transfer miles between BA and Avios and Iberia. Is this an accurate information? Is there somewhere a discussion about this topic on FT?

The links for this seem to describe the mechanics of making the transfer to/from IBwork, but is there a discussion of why you might want to do this?

Is the IB scheme better for certain routes? More flexible? Soaks up more cash costs typically?

If you fly Iberia award and book from Iberia Plus, the fuel surcharge is very small. If you book the same flight through BAEC, it is about 5 times more (depends on the route). Also, availability is better for IB flights booked through Iberia Plus. This may be a bug with BA's search engine, and you may be able to book those if you call, I don't know. QF search shows the better availability.
