Edit: Going to take a stab that this is the OSL-SMF and back that you posted on the successful redemptions thread.

LH YQ surcharge (YQ) £107.90
Norway Passenger Charge (ZN) £12.70
USDA APHIS Fee (XA) £3.20
US Immigration Fee (XY) £4.50
US Customs Fee (YC) £3.60
German Airport Security Tax (DE) £4.40
German Passenger Service Charge (RA) £13.60
US International Arrival Tax (US) £10.40
US September 11th Security Fee (AY) £4.80
US International Departure Tax (US) £10.40
US Passenger Facility Charge (XF) £2.90

£178.28 total

LH YQ is the biggest culprit. Out of interest what have you been quoted?
Hi Tiger_lily,
Thanks for your offer to check my taxes. Just rang card company to check on how much was charged to the card - actually less than quoted over the phone
Total for OSL-MUC(LH)-SFO(LH)-SMF(UA) (all in C apart from the SFO-SMF leg) and SFO-LAX(UA)-LHR(NZ) (all in C) came to £410.90 (that's incl £4.50 for the card use and £210 for the cash part of miles&cash). So, all smiles here!

Z2-HKG - lower YQ with separate tickets?

I consider to book DC award CPH-HKG. I know that YQ from HKG is quite low. Would it make a YQ difference whether I book as a single ticket or as 2 separate?

For your information the routing would be as follows:

CPH-BJS-HKG on SK and CA

HKG-BKK (stopover) BKK-FRA-CPH on TG and SK.

Thnx

ex-HKG fuel surcharge works mainly for HKG-XXX segment.
For your case, you save 145 NOK by booking two separate tickets (-4.50 GBP credit card fee)
If you want to minimize fuel surcharge, then fly long instead of taking short haul flight from HKG.

for example:

ex-ZRH on LX
ZRH-HKG-ZRH: total tax(incl fuel surcharge) amount: 2149 NOK
ZRH-HKG: total tax(incl fuel surcharge) amount: 1156 NOK

ex-HKG on LX
HKG-ZRH-HKG: total tax(incl fuel surcharge) amount: 1275 NOK
HKG-ZRH: total tax(incl fuel surcharge) amount: 556 NOK
But above trick doesn't apply on LH roundtrip.

ex-FRA on LH
FRA-HKG-FRA: total tax(incl fuel surcharge) amount: 2351 NOK
FRA-HKG: total tax(incl fuel surcharge) amount: 1438 NOK

ex-HKG on LH
HKG-FRA-HKG: total tax(incl fuel surcharge) amount: 2351 NOK
HKG-FRA: total tax(incl fuel surcharge) amount: 913 NOK

Taxes on Flights - Business Class - Please Help

Can someone please advise me on the following:-

Booked reward flights for February as follows (all in Business)

EDI - LHR - BMI
LHR - EWR - CO
EWR - FRA - LH
FRA - EDI - LH

Total Tax Charged as follows
181 CO YQ surcharge (YQ)
120 United Kingdom Air Passengers Duty (GB)
31.5 United Kingdom Passenger Service Charge (UB)
3.5 US Customs Fee (YC)
10.3 US International Arrival Tax (US)
10.3 US International Departure Tax (US)
3.1 USDA APHIS Fee (XA)
4.4 US Immigration Fee
1.6 US September 11th Security Fee (AY)
6.7 German Air Transport Tax (OY)
15 German Passenger Service Charge (RA)
5.5 German Airport Security (DE)
Total £392.90

Then I found CO had released more reward flights on the return leg, so I changed the return (incurring a £20 charge to do so) for return flight

EWR - EDI - CO

I queried if there was Tax due back to me but he said NO as the flight had already been ticketed - is this correct ? Surely the tax would not be paid until we had actually taken the flight? As we are no longer flying through Germany there should be no German Taxes - is this correct?

Hope someone can help so I can call up BMI India call centre again and query it.

Thanks

Correct, they only pay the tax if you take the flight so they should refund you. There are lots of posts of people having trouble getting taxes back after making changes to awards. Call them and insist on speaking to a supervisor if needs be.

Planning a redemption to WDH in business, does £565 in taxes sound right? Leaving on SAA and returning with Swiss.

What cost did ITA or a flight booking site give you as a point of comparison when you checked it out then?

Well a direct sample with Delta (award BC booking, one-way) with LIM-SJU is only a total of $51.00 of taxes/fees vs 700 Pounds with BMI. Also a slightly different R/T on CO LIM-SJU is only $73.50; yet that is based on R/T!!

It might depend on your routing, but I'm getting something in the region of £480.

I should also mention that my Executive/BusinessFirst flights on TAP/CO LIS-EWR-LIM were only $150 Pounds for the Europe-US-South America one-way trip. What is going on here??

pricing a LIM-SJU on CO website shows the following breakdown on a one way

Peru Sales Tax 313.20 GBP
U.S. Security Service Fee 1.60 GBP
Fuel Surcharge 151.50 GBP
U.S. APHIS User Fee 3.20 GBP
U.S. Immigration User Fee 4.40 GBP
U.S. Customs User Fee 3.50 GBP
Peru Airport Departure Tax 19.60 GBP
U.S. Passenger Facility Charge 1.90 GBP

the Sales Tax and Fuel surcharges look like killers...however even the revenue ticket taxes come to less than £350
