Is Onstar Gone?

Had a Caddy on my last two rentals and whenever I pressed the Blue OnStar button, I got a message stating (to the effect of) "OnStar Safe & Sound Services Active. Press the Red emergency button if you have an emergency; otherwise hang up."

When I finally got through by pressing the red emergency button, I was told that OnStar is not providing standard services (like driving directions) to rental cars anymore.

Is this true???

Sorry, I can't answer your question. Although every car I've bought or leased has had On Star (as have many of my rental Caddy's from AVIS), I have never used nor renewed the service. (My reasons are "for another day.) But why not purchase a Garmin C340 GPS on Amazon or some other discount site (not the C330 or C350). It is one of my favorite toys, easily portable in carry-on, recharges off the car's accessory socket, accurate down to 30ft. --- and, besides the clearly readable video display, has a lilting British Lass (if you so choose) who speaks to you step by step till you reach your destination.

On Star services are free for the first 100 minutes of usage or something like that for all new car purchases. Avis NEVER buys the service, they only allow people to use the service that is pre-existing.

Once the intro time runs out, there is no more free onstar services. At one point Avis offere Onstar pay per use to Cadillacs and above, but that phased out in 2005
