Smoke Smell Surcharge

I returned an Avis car to Boston Logan Airport on Monday 4 March. Yesterday I received a letter from Avis surcharging me $450 for cleaning due to a "smoke smell". When we left the car in Boston there 1was no smell. Nobody in the car smoked or vaped at anytime. I have complained to Avis but am a loss as to how to progress this as I cannot see how this can be proved by Avis or myself. Any suggestions? Note I am a UK resident.
