So there's my name on the board. "A11". I go to the spot at the far end of the garage and there's a minivan in the spot. (I always request an intermediate.) ok, I say, and then look inside and there's no contract tag. I look around, and there's no contract tags on any of the cars around that area.

I trek back to the Avis elite penalty counter on the third floor and explain what happened. Agent gives me a contract for a Chevy Impala in spot "E5".

I walk out to E5 and a guy in a red vest is behind the wheel ready to drive the car away. I think that it's one of the Avis car jockeys because the vest looks like the ones that the Avis car jockeys wear. The nice Asian man gets out and shows me the license plate number and spot number hand written on his contract envelope. Right about that point, I realize he isn't an Avis employee and he's a customer just like me. I thank him and tell him not to worry about it (after showing him the plate number on my contract) and trek back to the Avis Elite Penalty Counter on the third floor again.

Same agent .. apologizes profusely (though she can't understand how that vehicle was still showing as "available" to her) and gives me another contract for another Chevy Impala.

Third times a charm.

I guess it was just my day to have a bad day with Avis. Glad I didn't have any late afternoon meetings scheduled.
