I've had problems also. Recently, I was on the Avis site and had problems, so I sent an e-mail to them. I received a reply that said they WERE having problems but were fixed now. I doubt that they were fixed in the 5 minutes that it took me to send the e-mail after leaving their website.
BTW, I think National Car Rental has the worst website I've ever come across, even before their recent troubles. Talk about clunky!

Since getting Preferred Select status I've been cookied over to an "exclusive" site that's far worse than the regular site (how do I modify or add a coupon to an existing reservation on that thing?) and it's a significant deterrent to renting from Avis.

I have been unable to book a car for 2 days now.Using my select number it always comes back "unable to process at this time."I'll make one call today,if not fixed ,ny next call will be to Hertz to see what they'll offer me to move my business to them. This is crazy!

I've called and they say that their new website is creating massive problems. They also directed me to the Select Web site for some special offers. Now,if I could only reserve my car to get these offers.

Until recently Avis had a pretty reasonable website. I don't understand why they changed it.
The new website is slow, and difficult to work on. While before you could post a coupon and would get an email within short confirming (or denying) the coupon you now have to call them to verify the coupon.
I am happy with the service of Avis (I do about 40 rentals a year with them), but I will not for long deal with their unability to provide a proper booking tool on the web.

The Preferred system is now down 3 days and counting.
To reserve a car,as of this time, you must do it without your preferred number. After reserving, you need to call and add you number and partner (Hilton,airline,etc.)information.
This, hopefully, will work.I did it this morning. I'll know more Fri. ,when I pick up my car.

Bloody Avis site was down all day yesterday, Saturday (like FT !!). Also Hertz was down. Only Hertz ticked me off even more, because it would let you go through the whole reservations process and just when you ask the system for a final quote, it would return a "sorry, system is down" message.
Anyways, back to Avis, of all the sites they are the only ones that do not verify the validity of any coupon one uses at the time of reservation. National (my preferred site) and Hertz all check the coupon. The reason this is important is that when you enter a coupon number on the Avis site, it is not guaranteed that that rental location will accept your coupon (some coupons might only be valid at airports locations for example, although it is not stated on the coupon) and you could be put up to some arguing at rental time. When the discount is substantial I now e-mail Avis with the confirmation number for verification. A pain of a process.

A few weeks ago I booked a car on the Avis site. Then later in the day I went back to check a rate, and without ever accepting it to reserve, it reserved me. I got the email confirmation and everything. A quick call fixed things.

Agreed....this new Avis website is terrible. You cannot back up and change your car type without having to rekey the page and it is DEAD FREAKING SLOW!
Avis customer service, in general, is taking a trip into the toilet. I had to fight at IND last week for my Pref Sel upgrade from a 4 door compact to a mid size. The return process took 30 minutes since the agent didn't check out my car properly. DFW return agents are rude.
All in all, I just noticed that I have sent the last 4 weeks of my travel to Hertz. For about $5 more a day I at least get a half-decent experience.

I contacted their VP Marketing 2 weeks ago. No response. I talked with a Select customer service rep who suggested that I contact him. They are "going crazy" with the new web site, yet corporate doesn't seem to hear them.
