now that Beijing's Silk Alley appears to be gone
any suggestions on where all the merchants with their North Fake "booty" have set up shop, now that the gov't appears to have torn down silk alley? Or more delicately put - where's the next best place to shop now? thanks!

A friend who lives in Beijing emailed the following. It doesn't speak to your quesion of fakes, but you might find some useful information regardless.
Silk Alley is being rehoused in a large glass and steel building, not
yet open, though possibly so by the time you get here. I never liked
Silk Alley...too touristy, the stall holders grabbbed passers by and I
always felt that was the one place in Beijing where my wallet might
indeed be stolen...it was also a fire hazard! There are many markets as
good and better. See following list...
Russian Market: not worth it...other markets are a whole lot better
Ya Shiu is my favourite, another 4 storey building focusing on shoes,
clothing of every kind, arts and crafts and other interesting stuff.
The new Lido Market, rehoused recently, and not yet very well
known...same as Ya Shiu, but not as good as either it or Hongqiao.
Ritan Office Building: in the Embassy district and just the best place
for real brands as opposed to copies.

We found North Fakes and Foakleys and Rolexs and so on just about EVERYWHERE in Beijing, even in the big department stores on Wang Fu Jing. I'd give you more details, Fermat, but they don't seem to fit in this little box.....
