Old Manila Question

Is there anyone on FT who is old enough to have visited Manila before WWII?

Why I ask is that I recently saw an episode of the 1952 documentary "Victory at Sea" and in this episode "Return of the Allies", footage purporting to be of Manila before the Japanese invasion in 1941 clearly shows street traffic travelling on the left. I would have expected that, given their history (Spanish then USA) they would have kept right.

Two possible explanations come to mind:
  • the film has somehow been mirror reversed
  • the footage is of somewhere else

Does anyone know if they did, in fact, drive on the left in the Philippines at some stage

Just in case anyone else is interested in this facet of motoring history:

Although there were no replies to this when I first posted back in 2004, I thought I would post a youtube link to a 1938 travel film I have since come across which shows that they did drive on the left in those days.

In terms of time or number of replies?

If the former, the answer is no (this example thread just got bump on 11/30/2013 after 12.5 years of inactivity).

The year 2004 isn't even close to the record. I've seen threads dated back to the late 1990s that got bumped, and they all have more replies than this current one.

Right-hand traffic was introduced in the Philippines on 10 March 1945, to facilitate American troop movements.

^ Thanks. I suspected something like that could have happened and I always thought there must be someone around who knew. And sorry mods and everyone else for bumping such an old thread, even as OP.

No problem here. I enjoyed the video, particularly when the narrator talked about Intramuros.
