$30-$40 is actually really expensive for a massage in Jakarta. But normal prices I guess at luxury hotels I guess. If you look for a spa outside your hotel you might get the same treatment for about $6.

Just have to be a bit careful so you don't end up in an awkward situation ;)

It's not expensive for a massage at a 4-5 star hotel.

$6 is pretty cheap for a full body massage. I'd guess many people aren't comfortable in going to some of the places that are that cheap.

Agree, my wife pays about 100K (~$7.50), for a two-hour massage to the masseuse who comes to our house. I've seen prices slightly higher outside the house at some fairly nice spas.

These aren't in some shady massage parlours. Jakarta locals will say you are gila (crazy) for paying $40 for a massage.

 You might find an individual willing to give you a massage for that price, ....but a half decent spa environment would eat $6/hour as a contribution to overheads !!

I'm not challenging you, but it would be really helpful if you could indicate a spa offering a safe and comfortable environment in any central area with $6 treatments.

Heck! Let's splurge and make it $10 :D

Alright, check out http://www.zenfamilyspa.com/ i think it's about 150k rp for a 90 min full body massage.

Just one example. There are many more spa's like that ;)

In the Philippines, you can go to Wensha Spa and have an hour long massage for about $15, including a full buffet that you have access to for 5 hours. You can eat before the massage and again after. Only limit is you need to be out at the end of 5 hours.

It certainly looks professional :)

Except they are a bit shy about mentioning prices. Perhaps I didn't look hard enough.

Yikes! You call that an ARGUMENT

I was surprised at a service provider creating a decent website with no indication of prices: that's all.

go to any of the Bersih Sehat/Mitra Sehat chain, they are usually inside a mall
and yeah, as the name suggested, they are (supposed to be) family friendly :)

I am planning a trip for end of May 2018 (quite early, but as a German I need my plans!). It will be around Ramadan and I intend to go to Bandung on Thursday.
Which means from Sunday evening to Thursday I would like to spend visiting Jakarta to get a feel for the capital before I explore the country (a little bit) for the first time.
Any recommendations or advice on watering holes (beer) during the evening? Would it even be possible during Ramadan to get a beer somewhere?
I have read here and elsewhere that small convenience stores are not allowed to sell beer (anymore) but I am a little bite afraid of no beer at all during that time (zeh German!).

Also, for those people living for a longer time in Indonesia / Jakarta: would it be OK if I go out during the day and drink some water while exploring the sites (Monasir et. al.)? I know that as a traveler I would not fall under the rules of fasting, but would like to check the local customs with you knowledgeable folks.

Many thanks in advance and safe travel or stay!

all of nightclubs are closed during Ramadan under authority order. no small convenience store selling alcoholic beverages anymore as it is prohibited.

in other months you can get it in bigger/supermarket, but I'm not sure in Ramadan, I think you won't be able to. (I may be wrong though, I don't drink so couldn't give you exact info). I'm not sure whether hotels provide any.

Bali is different case altogether.

as for drinking water in public, it's not a big deal here, moreover if you're easily identified as tourist. few stares, maybe. but it won't get you arrested.
