Moving to Jakarta

Okay, this is my first post, so bear with me!

Moving to Jakarta and having real problems looking for accommodation - all the rental properties I see on the websites are either in huge apartment blocks or huge houses. And they all look the same. Is it the case that all accommodation is like what is on the real estate websites like rumah123? Surely, there are houses without the usual 50 bedrooms and 20 bathrooms or huge winding staircases and gigantic chandeliers?

Jakarta has quite a price spread of accommodations. You can find a Kost where locals rent a room for $50 a month, or a 8 bedroom, 1 acre place that is $10k a month.

If you give some guidance on where in Jakarta you're looking for, an apartment, house, etc, I can give you some info from my stays in CGK.

As J.C. said, there is quite the spread, you just have to know where to look. High rise apartments are a relatively new thing to JKT, they first western style apt complex was built until the 1980's, now they are springing up all over the city. Houses (for expats) do tend to be on the huge side, however, smaller ones are here, few and far between. What part of the city are you looking to live in? Houses may be cheaper than apartments. Feel free to PM, I will help as much as I can.

Thanks Jaimito and Penguinmoon! I am told and my research suggests somewhere in South Jakarta. I am looking at up to USD 3,300-500 per month with 3-4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a pool. Apart from rumah123, the Indonesian expatriate website and the more commonly used real estate websites, is there an informal, word of mouth system on houses that are coming onto the market for rent. Or are there tasteful townhouses or apartments (but not in huge complexes) which cannot be researched via dedicated websites, for example. By the way, this website (FlyerTalk) is a font of information for Indonesia!

There are expat websites that people will sometimes talk about moving and having a house available. Lots of other info there as well.

Hi, Kai. I have lived in four different houses in JKT. I found one thru a real estate agent, and the other three, I just got on the back of a bike and rode thru neighborhoods I knew I would like to live in, looking for for rent signs. If a house has a for rent sign on it, you can pretty much knock on the door and ask to see it. Most of the properties will have some kind of staff staying there to "look" out for it. If 3300-3500 is your budget you will HAVE NO TROUBLE finding what you are looking for. I don't know of anyone (and I work for the largest emplyer of expats in Indonesia), that has found a house and rented it thru rumah123.

One more thing if you are looking in Jakarta Selatan, check out Kemang. Not to far from the city center, and an area where there is a good mix of expats and Indonesians. Lots of shops and stores that cater to Western taste, I can recommend more areas if you are feeling a bit more exotic....

JC, Penguinmoon, many thanks for your help once again. I can rest easy that the houses on rumah123 are not the only places available. I was starting to get worried. I might PM one or both of you if you don't mind.

Quick transit in CGK?

I need to do a quick transit in CGK - arriving on a TK flight at 1725h and departing on a KL flight at 1850h the same evening, without clearing immigration/customes. I was unable to ascertain whether both airlines use the same terminal and whether this connection would be at all feasible. Any insight from someone who has experience of CGK, would be appreciated.

Both airlines use the same terminal (Terminal 2), and if you're in transit, you simply need to walk up the staircase/escalator in the middle of the arrivals concourse (indicated by a sign) before reaching immigration.

The only issue is that it is usually roped off, because there are so few transit passengers. I suggest that you let the airline agent that meets your flight on the jet bridge know what you're doing-- they can give you directions as to how to proceed; they are usually quite helpful. Failing that, there will be plenty of airport officials standing near the staircase/escalator-- one of them will be happy to help.

As an aside, the published minimum connecting time for your flights is 60 minutes.

Finally, even as a transit passenger, you will have to pay a departure tax of 150,000Rp ( a little under US$17). They will take US$20, but don't expect to get the interbank rate ;) .

Will you have KL boarding passes? Or, you need to get once you land in CGK? Not having a connecting boarding pass may complicate things a bit....

If you don't have an onward boarding pass, check at the transit desk. They will either be able to issue you one there, or they will send someone to the departure hall to get it printed out (expect this to take about 15 minutes).

It will help if you have a printout of your itinerary with your record locator if you need a boarding pass.

Also, in checking other posts, it looks like you may not have to pay the departure tax as a transit passenger-- just keep a copy of the boarding pass from your arriving flight.

CGK transit

Thanks HKG_Flyer1 & Penguinmoon for your thoughtful responses. If KL does OLCI, then I can try to get one done while we are in transit in SIN on the inbound TK. I will have to keep my fingers crossed that TK is not late, since the two tickets (TK & KL) are separate and one cannot be crosslinked to another.

Penguinmoon May 11, 2011 6:17 pm

It will make it MUCH easier if you have the boarding pass. My experience has not been the same as HKG's experience. The one time I had to transit intl to intl without a boarding pass, it took much longer than 15 mintues to get the boarding pass.

Just keep in mind that you will only have a 1:15 scheduled ground stop in SIN (which could be compressed if you arrive late). During that time, you will also have to re-clear security and check-in at the gate prior to being allowed to reboard the plane--- although there are plenty of free internet terminals at SIN, you'll need to access a business center to print out your boarding pass.

Some airlines seem to have the ability to print on-line boarding passes for CGK departures disabled (possibly because of the requirement for locally originating passengers to pay the departure tax in cash at the airline counter).
