Lunch: Tue - Fri 11:30 - 2:30
Dinner: Everyday 6:15 - 10:30pm
Brunch: Sat - Sun 12:00 - 3pm
Bar Menu: Everyday 5pm - 11pm
Desserts: Everyday 6:15 - 11:30pm
This restaurant is located atop a early twentieth century building at the end of the Bund nearest the tunnel. It is in fact two doors down from the old Hong Kong Shanghai Bank building (now occupied by the Pudong Development Bank). The restaurant while located on the seventh floor and having a Bund address is actually accessed by the door to the building in Guang Dong Lu which runs perpendicular to the Bund. Head in and into the lift, which will deposit you into a soft pastel and subdued lighting decorated restaurant without equal.
It was started by Michelle Garnaut of "M on the Fringe" fame ( in Hong Kong) and she has stayed true to the history of Shanghai in creating a menu consisting of dishes which hearken to the Russian, French, and British influences on the city.
Her wine list is diverse and I have found many Australian and New Zealand gems there. I have yet to have a bad bottle of wine there in fact. I always start with a Champagne cocktail because they do it so well. Take it and head out onto the huge balcony and just lose yourself in the view of the Huang Pu river meandering by in front of you. You are immediately cast back in time as you gaze down the beautifully lit Bund. This view is highly recommended for couples as an aphrodisiac and excellent precursor to a romantic evening.
The bread is served and the choice there in my mind is the Olive Bread which has nice size chinks of olives in it and is baked on premises. I usually have a few pieces of this as I enjoy the Foie Gras starter.
The signature dish here is the same as in Hong Kong, namely the slat baked lamb. This and bottle of Pinot Noir from New Zealand is an amazing experience. Another common choice I make is to have the confit of goose.
Desserts are fair, but by then I am usually ready to move down to the Bund for stroll before heading off into the night scene of this, my favorite of Asian cities.
NB Sunday Brunch is also a very nice way to start the day and the menu is simple but pleasant.
Reservations are recommended.
