I was in Taiwan in transit for 9 hours end of November. I was given the test kit on exit. I went into the City and visited a tea shop, had a massage and then dinner at a restaurant. No one asked for anything. I didn't do the test and when I went back to the airport, no one asked for anything again. In your case, if you have to stay in a hotel, the only restriction is the room has to have its own bathroom. You cannot use a capsule hotel or hostel with shared bathroom.
But airport staff were still handing out test kits. |

Because technically you are supposed to do the RAT after a couple of days-what if you are asymptomatic but test positive?
If they tested positive, they'll have to quarantine for 5 days. If they were staying at a hotel, they'll have to quarantine at somewhere else (the local government will arrange that).

I stayed at a "hotel" with a shared bathroom last week, for my short overnight TPE layover.
But airport staff were still handing out test kits. As for giving RATs to overnight transit passengers, I assume it's because they were required to do a RAT within 2 days prior to boarding a plane. The TW CDC has done a pretty good job providing guidance on how to conduct the 0+7 scheme, but as always, it's ridiculously hard to find: FAQs - Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (cdc.gov.tw). |

Arriving passengers are required to do a RAT on the day of arrival or the next. If they don't plan on going out during the next 7 days, they don't have to do another RAT.

If by "hotel" you meant the home of a relative or friend, then a shared bathroom is ok provided that it can be "cleaned and disinfected after each use". If it was an actual hotel, then the room must have its own bath. That's some spurious information above.

It's accurate information. That is the guidance. It just isn't being enforced. So you didn't follow the rules, and since no one is monitoring you, you got away with it. But that IS the guidance from the CDC.
TPE conducted no test, and the hostel (not a fly-by-night operation) had no signage about these "rules"; therefore, how could Taiwan's CDC be considered the paragon of pandemic guidance? It's not up to me to tell TPE officials to do their jobs. |

I have a 1h25 min International-International T2 transfer in a week (BR to BR). Should I expect that to be tight given holiday congestions?

Although if you are connecting from SEA and to NA, it might get tight. In the past couple days there have been ~1hr delay for BR flights arriving from SEA. If both flights are on the same ticket you should be fine. |

As Skyman65 said, there's no special holiday next week. The only people who observe Christmas in Taiwan are children and shop owners :p.

Thank you for the detail. It's VIE-TPE-BKK on the same PNR. At this point I really can't make any changes but it'll matter if I'll have to hustle and pick a seat close to the exit (or even try to get a points upgrade to business class).

Have been in Taipei for more than a week now (flew HND-TSA - entry couldn't have been smoother).
Since Dec 1 the government says masks are no longer required outdoors, but like in Japan, 90%+ of people are still masked while outdoors. I don't get any odd looks though when I'm not masked. I think when hot weather comes masking will decrease dramatically. |
Landed in TPE yesterday. The covid tests were off to the side and it looked optional to pick them up (i.e. a bunch of people walked past them and didn't pick them up).
