BREAKING NEWS:

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia - Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Menkomarves) Luhut Binsar Panjaitan said Indonesia would not open the tourism sector to foreign tourists until the end of 2020.

He said the government decided to optimize domestic tourists to restore the tourism industry that had collapsed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"We want 70 percent of domestic tourists. The problem of foreign tourists, we will not accept it until the end of the year. Let us first consolidate," said Luhut in a webinar held by APINDO, Thursday (13/8).

If this is implemented, it means that the plan of Bali Governor Wayan Koster to reopen Bali to foreign tourists on September 11, 2020 will be canceled.

The reason is, the government is still implementing Regulation of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Permenkumham) number 11 of 2020 which temporarily prohibits foreigners from entering the territory of the Republic of Indonesia.

However, Luhut said that positive cases of Covid-19 in a number of tourism areas had decreased. This means that tourist attractions are starting to be re-visited by local tourists.

"Yesterday we opened Bali and Banyuwangi," said Luhut.

According to Luhut, the recovery of the tourism sector will take place, although it is not easy. Luhut estimates that it will take about 10 months for this sector to resume its activity as before Covid-19.

"We are grateful that after two weeks the number of Covid-19 in Bali decreased. The governor said there were local herbs, he drank wine from them. Whether it's true or not, the important thing seems to have dropped, I support it," he said.

Previously, the Provincial Government (Pemprov) of Bali will reopen the tourism sector for foreign tourists (tourists) on September 11, 2020. The reopening of the tourism sector will be followed by strict health protocols to reduce the potential for transmission of the corona virus.

Bali Governor Wayan Koster stated that his party had issued a governor's circular on the adaptation of new habits so that the opening of the tourism sector could make tourists feel safe and comfortable. This is not only for foreign tourists, but also local.

"To start this activity, we have issued a governor's circular regarding the adaptation of new habits related to the implementation of this activity so that it is healthy, safe, and comfortable for local and international people who will visit Bali," said Wayan in a video conference some time ago.

Meanwhile, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Wishnutama stated that the government would target Indonesians who usually vacation abroad to visit domestic tourist sites. He noted that there are at least 8 million Indonesians who travel abroad each year.

"How do we strive for this potential, so that they travel in Indonesia. Imagine a lot of US $ 9 billion spent abroad. This means that there is potential to spend in Indonesia," Wishnutama concluded.

JAKARTA: Foreign tourists won't be allowed to visit Bali for the rest of 2020 due to coronavirus concerns, its governor said, scrapping a plan to open up the Indonesian island from next month.

The holiday hotspot re-opened beaches, temples and other tourism spots for domestic visitors at the end of July and had said it would let foreign tourists return on Sep 11.

But the plan has now been cancelled over concerns about Indonesia's mounting virus cases and with many foreign nationals subject to travel bans in their home countries.

It's not even that straightforward to go there as a domestic tourist at the moment, but several coworkers have traveled to Bali recently rather than the hassle of international travel.
