Indonesia Visa Differences?

I'm a US citizen and will be travelling to Bali for a week. I understand there is a visa-free and visa-on-arrival program ($35). Why would anyone want to choose the visa-on-arrival option if it costs money?

If I go with the visa-free option, does that mean the immigration lines will go faster in DPS? I was there in 2012 and the lines were terrible from what I remember.

Thanks.

Because the free one is valid for 30 days...full stop. it can NOT be changed or extended. The paid one can be varied.

Plus I think the free entry is only intended for tourists. They occasionally ask your reason for visiting the country: up to you whether or not you volunteer any other motivation for your visit.

The paid visa-on-arrival can be extended for another 30 days (you need to apply for it about 14 days after you enter Indonesia). The free visa is non-extendable.
