What is the best way to do laundry in these cities? Hong Kong has many drop-off laundries and wanted to know if there are any suggestions for these 2 cities. I am ok with a do it yourself coin operated place. Will be in the area for almost 3 weeks.
There are a fair number of coin-operated laundry places in KL. The one my travelling companion used last time was near KL Sentral: Laundry Hub, 3-11, Jalan Thambipillay, Brickfields, 50470 Kuala Lumpur.
Seemed fine. A lot like many other coin-operated laundry places in Malaysia.

I might get in trouble for saying this, but one of the rites of passage for budget travelers in places like KL is getting "camel washed" (or maybe Muslim- or Arab-washed), which is what happens when you use a hotel laundry or laundry place that mixes laundry and yours gets mixed with those from people from places with, er....different hygiene concepts or availabilities.
If it happens you'll know it instantly, and good luck getting the smell out even with subsequent washings. You might find one of those places that does laundry by the separate load and charges more, but those are still very much the minority.
I still resist the coin ops in places where letting someone else do it is affordable, though. But I'm more wary of the camel-wash possibility in KL than, say, Thailand.

I've had other people's clothes mixed in with mine even back home. Usually this gets caught and fixed, but I have a shirt hanging in my closet which looks like one of mine but is a different brand. I can't remember if this was an extra shirt or whether one of mine was missing when I got my laundry back.
I prefer coin-op laundries, or at least ones which I can watch doing separate loads.
