Perhentian/Redang accommodation recommendations

Hey!

Can anyone recommend places to stay on either of the Perhentian Islands or Redang island please? We are travelling in September, and the main thing we want is somewhere that is walkable to nearby bars/restaurants rather than having to eat in the hotel every night.

Thank you!

I stayed on a place on Perhentian Besar (long enough ago that I forget the name). It cost RM10 at the time to hire a boat between islands. Both are walkable in the main areas, though Kecil had the most non-hotel places to eat. Though even on Besar at the time, you could always eat at a different hotel. Kecil was a bit like a toned-down version of Ko Pha Ngan and had more of the really cheap places for backpackers. A few places would sell beer to foreigners (Bintang, IIRC), but it wouldn't be on the menu.

I really liked the Perhentians, as they were not nearly as overrun as the Thai islands. Also walkable like Boracay in the Philippines (another place now smothered with people). The main thing "saving" the Malaysian destinations might be that they're in the most conservative Muslim-dominated provinces that don't have so much to see landside.

Wonderful, thanks so much for your help! I think Kecil fits the bill best for us - basically looking for the Thailand of 20+ years ago!
