Nha Trang, Con Dao and Danang are the usual choices.

They are all less than an hour flight from SGN, which will be quicker than going anywhere by surface transport.

Domestic airfare is pretty cheap in Vietnam. I recently checked SGN<>CXR on VN and it was $60 RT. Other carriers are probably a little cheaper.

Overnight train to Nha Trang ^

I did not care for Mui Ne. The beach wasn't that great, and it was mostly filled with Russian people (not many locals). It's very windy (hence all the kite surfing), the waves were big, and the beach wasn't very big. I'm glad I visited Mui Ne, but I do not intend to go back.

You could also take the Hydrofoil to Vung Tau (90 minutes), then local taxi or car service 45 minutes north to Ho Tram. Several nice resorts there, including the brand new Grand Ho Tram Strip.

There have been too many incidents with the hydrofoil in the past year that I would think twice about that option. I'm openminded and adventurous but when travelling with kids and family members, the headaches and safety concern outtrumped all.

Forget Vung Tao. Lousy beach & oily. Lotsa petroleum work going on there. I'd think about Phu Quoc. Nice clean beaches, flat water for the kids, & quick flight from SGN. It's a pretty island.
