It's still fair to say the country is largely off the beaten track, even though it claims 5 million or so annual tourists (though many of those are of Filipino descent visiting family, as all non-Philippines passports are counted).
Boracay is the one place on peoples' radar, and it's really a small and fragile island that has gotten overbuilt. Unlike Thailand, most other nice beaches are hard to access.
