Need to get to Da Nang in March.
Looks like Vietnam Airlines is the only choice and only from Ho Chi Minh or Hanoi.
Am I missing something?

We drove from Hue to Hoi An via Da Nang. And then when I flew back to BKK we drove to Da Nang and flew from there via SGN on VN. The drive from Hue was not all that long. But of course you have to get to Hue...

My wife and I are going to Vietnam in August. For internal flights, what are people's experiences with Jetstar, Vietjetair, or Air Mekong? They are less expensive than Vietnam Airlines but my wife is concerned that they may not be as safe--or as comfortable (based upon a more general dislike of flying). Any help would be appreciated.

We've flown Jetstar SGN-DAD and DAD-HAN without problems. The website works well and the flights are regular 3 -3 seating. Our choice are aisle seats across from each other.

Air Asia the same. Good website, everything works.

If you book early the flights could be very inexpensive.

We're disappointed there are no cheap flights between HKG-HAN. The new (starting late March) Dragon Air (CX) flight between HKG-DAD is going for US$400. in August.

I'm trying to get from Spokane, WA (GEG) to Da Nang for a triathlon this April, and I'm experiencing sticker shock...$3500!

Am I missing something? Anybody have any recommended travel hacks for me on this one? I don't mind stringing together a couple itineraries, although I am traveling with a bicycle, so I need to be a bit careful luggage doesn't get lost in the process...

Out of those three, I have only used Jetstar and have used them quite a lot. First of all, I don't have any fears on safety. The pilots always seem to be westerners (Australian typically) and the cabin crew pretty alert. Dunno how old the planes are. Frankly compared with sitting in a taxi or crossing the road, the risks seem pretty small to me. The trip from HAN to the city centre can be hairy at times.

The biggest problem I've had with Jetstar is cancelled flights/flights being combined. This has never left me stranded somewhere, but has been annoying.

When booking Jetstar online, it's well worth paying the small amount extra for the front seats IMHO. In fact usually I have no problems getting 1A/1C. Plenty of leg room and you're by the door (safer??). The VN travellers just don't seem to value such things (and have shorter legs!). However if they combine the flight with another, you generally lose the seat.

Thanks. Are flights cancelled a lot? This could mess up our vacation if we are seriously delayed. But if it is just an hour or two, that's not a problem.

You didnt give us exact dates but if I look on Orbitz, I see Spokane to HCMC for $1075 nearly every day.
Alaska Air to Seattle, and then Asiana to SGN via ICN

Korean Air flies directly to Da Nang from ICN, but it costs several hundred dollars more.

Personally I would fly to HCMC, spend a day there, then make my way up to Da Nang by Vietnam Air or by train.

I prefer Asiana to Vietnam - most comfortable/friendly flights. Both Korean and Asiana fly nonstop from ICN Seoul to DAD Danang, but as previously stated, it might be cheaper to enter through Hanoi or Saigon. To get a good price on domestic flights, you have to book direct on the Vietnam Airlines website.

To find a good price for the transpacific trip in March, use ITA Matrix - use the calendar option.

I would not pay more than $1500. for the transpacific trip (both Korean and Asiana will give you a hotel room for that long layover - call their 800 phone number after booking)

Use the VOA visa - 2 day turnaround (you must show the Approval Letter or Visa to the airline for boarding). I use this agent in Hanoi for the VOA visa - I've done it 5 times.

I note they haven't updated the "stamping" fee. Regardless of which agent people use, they will always pay the same fee on arrival. Now $45 for single entry/one month.
