I'm going on a trip to Almaty, Kazakhstan in mid-October with a friend who used to live there. He doesn't want to spend much time in Kazakhstan because he's so familiar with it, and he feels like nearby Kyrgyzstan is too similar to excite him. We were thinking of checking out some Silk Road destinations near Tashkent, but does anyone have any other suggestions, such as information about:
Kashgar?
Urumqi?
Tajikistan?
Some other place?
Also, any thoughts on how best to get around? Local airline, bus, train, etc.?

Kazakhstan is the 9th largest country in the world. How can he possibly too familiar with it?
Oh well, I hear great things about Uzbekistan. The South Aral Sea has more preserved ship graveyards than the North Aral Sea.
