Cafayate Wine Tasting
Has anyone done wine tasting in/near Cafayate (south of Salta)? I would really appreciate any suggestions. We will just have a few hours there since we are driving back and forth from Salta in one day.
Thank!

You'll find a nice article here on touring the wine country around Cafayate. Too bad you only have the day there as it's a really nice little town and some of the wineries are a short bike ride from the center. Fantastic drive/ride there and back through a really dramatic canyon. Have fun!

I forgot to mention that though that article I linked to above was about touring with a guide, many of the wineries are open to the public without an appointment. Very few have an English-speaking guide though, so unless you speak Spanish you won't get much out of a tour of their facilities. The wine is heavenly though if you like Torrontes. There's also an ice cream place there that has wine flavors. Pretty odd...

globetrots,
Thanks. Yes, I wish we had more time, but originally we weren't even planning on going to Salta so we only have about full 3 days in the area. The more I read, the more interesting it sounds. One of my companions is a native Spanish speaker, and we also speak French and Italian so we won't have a problem.
I look forward to trying the wine ice cream. Thanks for the link.

There's only a handful of wineries in the immediate area so even at a leisurely pace, it wouldn't take too long to try them all. The only off-putting thing is that some of the bigger wineries outside town have a security guard outpost. Ended up just walking to a couple of bodegas just a block off the main plaza.
There is one heladeria in town that is said to be better than the others but it was never opened. Did try the torrontes and cab sauvignon flavours and have to agree torrontes is better.

I strongly suggest getting appointments at the Bodegas you wish to visit.....
