You can get a Movistar pre-paid card with data service in Buenos Aires. I use one with my iPhone.

You will need to get your Blackberry unlocked however. Call your current carrier and see if they will do it for you. (Tell them you are traveling and need it.)

Where are you from and who is your current carrier? (I find that Verizon's int'l data plan activated for the days of travel is all I need).

Good point. I forgot how easy it is to turn on international data. T-mobile offers it for $19.95/mo, and you can turn it on and off as you need.

Remember to turn on "unconditional call forwarding" before you leave or else you will pay for every call that comes in whether you pick it up or not.

Where do you get a prepaid data chip? I have bought the normal Sim cards from a guy hanging out near retiro, but i have never seen a prepaid data sim. I use an old unlocked Blackberry that if i got jacked i would not care if it were lost.

Do you need a DNI? Can you recharge it electronicaly at a kiosko or loccutorio?

Sorry, I should have clarified that.

The Movistar phone pre-paid card also provides data service. You can get 1GB of data to use over 2 days by texting DATA to 2345. Be careful with remembering to do this though as it will also use your credit at a much higher rate when you are not in the 2 day window.

On my jailbroken iPhone, I turn off 3G and EDGE when I do not need them and then send that text message to get data as needed. I also recharge with my credit card by dialing *444 from the mobile phone.

Here's some of the Movistar promotions and text messages you can send for discounts: http://www.discoverbuenosaires.com/m...paid-argentina

Wirelessly posted (Nokia N97 / Palm TX: Mozilla/5.0 (SymbianOS/9.4; Series60/5.0 NokiaN97-3/21.2.045; Profile/MIDP-2.1 Configuration/CLDC-1.1) AppleWebKit/525 (KHTML, like Gecko) BrowserNG/7.1.4)

I dont think you need a DNI to buy prepaid cards... a passport will do.

You only need a passport to buy a SIM directly from the cell provider. I find the easiest way to recharge is to use PagoFacil or Rapipago agents.

The last time i tried (2 years ago) i was told that i needed a DNI.

I have had the same prepaid chip that i bought from some guy near retiro since. I will try for the Movistar data chip.

I have a Personal one now, will try the data one next trip.

Cheers!

You only need a DNI if you want to get a cell phone contract.

Yes, as in a post-paid contract. Actually, if you have a CDI and a local bank account, you can forgo the DNI but thats a different play...
