How Does H109 work?

The H109 certificate (I believe that's what S and S+ members get as part of their "package") indicates that it's good for one free upgrade from BC to First or Coach to BC (on select trains).

The certificate indicates that it is "valid for one (1) one-class upgrade valid day of departure only and reserved no more than one (1) hour prior to train departure."

What exactly does that mean? Can the "whole" ticket only be bought one hour prior to scheduled departure? Or can I buy the base fare ahead of time and then go to the ticket window an hour before departure and attempt to upgrade my existing fare?

Thank you for help.

You can buy your ticket at any point you like, and the sooner the better in terms of getting a lower price. Then when you get to the station, present the coupon along with either the ticket (if you have it already) or your printed reservation confirmation. If you're within the one hour window and space is still available, the agent will issue you a ticket good for the upgraded seat. Note: You cannot do this onboard the train, it must be done in the station. The conductor cannot take the coupon from you.

Just as an aside, Select Plus members get coupons that allow them to call up to two days before departure to get their upgrade.
