Basic Question re: Points and Airlines
Hello,
New here. OK so I'm making about 10,000 points a month with my corporate Amex. Do I quickly need to affiliate my increasing points with a particular airline? Or, can I just have 75,000 or so and call an airline and ask to use them?
In other words - what do I need to do now, if anything?
Thanks much!
Tommy

Welcome to FlyerTalk!!
You don't need to do anything until you are ready to cash them in. You'll have to coordinate a bit, depending on the airline, so that you can make the transfer and do the redemption without risking the seats disappearing while the transfer is happening. Some airlines (CO, DL) are instant transfers, while others (NH) may take a couple days, so it can be difficult.
When you are ready to use them you'll have to find a reward seat on the appropriate airline and then make the transfer from AmEx to the airline and then actually issue the ticket. It is pretty straightforward, except the part about finding availability for a reward seat.

Not sure how other airlines work, as I've only redeemed award tickets on Delta (does anything else fly out of ATL?) but Skymiles allows you to hold an award itinerary online even without enough Skymiles in your account.
Hold your itinerary for I believe 2 days, then fire off the transfer.

keep your points with amex since they never expire, and get familiar with americanexpress.com/travel, it's amazing what you can do on it !!
Best of luck
