"My First Black Amex" -J Peterman
J Peterman is a monthly catalogue (mostly clothes) that features fun stories that correspond with each product. Seinfeld actually based a character off of the owner of the self named catalog company.
I was looking at the latest issue and one of his stories has the title, "My First Black Amex." Not the most accurate of details, but it is always amusing to see what (usually false) rumors are spread about the card.
Here is a link to the ad.

"One of my favorite spots in Hong Kong is the Captain’s Bar at the Mandarin Hotel."
Last time I was there (before the refurbishment closure) the Captain's Bar was full of Philippino hookers...

Yesterday, the salesman at the Verizon store told me he has seen a dozen
of them in the store recently. "Everybody has one"
(He also insisted that my card has a gps embedded in it
I rarely use the card (I like the *wood points, the cent is for upgrades) but I wanted the Purchase Protection and Buyer's Assurance Plan on my treo.
The funny thing about the black card is that there are usually 2 reactions
1. No idea what it is, never heard of it
2. See them all the time, no big deal
The $$ one can save traveling is the only reason I can imagine for having one.

All it means is that you spend a lot of money - not necessarily your own money !

I agree. Someone said that the card is carried by people with more money than sense, but the truth is, if used correctly it can save you bigtime.
I calculated on an upcoming (short!) trip that we saved close to 2K-- discounted FHR hotel rate, FC tickets on Delta using free upgrade, and 1 day free on our Hertz rental bc of the 4 hour bonus on the last day.
The first year that the card doesn't pay for itself, I'm going back to Plat.
