Business Gold refresh October 2023: $375 fee effective February 2024.

Looks like the Business Gold has been refreshed with expanded bonus point categories for the 4x points on top two monthly spend categories; 3x points on Amex travel flights and hotels; Walmart+ credits and $20/month credits at FedEx, Grubhub or office supply stores.

However, the AF is going from $295 to $375 for applications received as of 2/1. Assuming the new benefits and AF will be coming to existing cardholders at some point.

Won’t necessarily opine on my take as I don’t have this card… but will put it out there that yet again Amex is raising an AF in exchange for a coupon book of credits.

GONE are 4X monthly categories SHIPPING and AIRFARE BOUGHT DIRECTLY FROM AIRLINES (if either is in your two highest monthly spend of all categories offered) and 25% rebate when buying tickets through amex using points (giving effective 1.33% cpp)
NOT good.
I signed up a few weeks ago, I'm gonna hit my 90K SUB and then cancel and demand a prorated refund

Have you received a notice from American Express that any changes will apply to your account in the first twelve months?

Might still be worthwhile only for the SUB. With typical $10K/90K MR SUB resulting in ~100K MR it’s ~335 points/$ at $295 and ~265 points/$ at $375. Even with a typical juice* for tax payments (which many people do to meet SUB minimums) of ~2%/$200 on the entire minimum spend it’s ~200 points/$ at $295 and ~175 points/$ at $375. Don’t know of any place else where points can be purchased at that level.

And many have decided that a biz plat typical SUB of $15K/150K MR (~240 to 165 points/$) is worthwhile for a sock drawer card**.

With all due respect, might be cutting off your nose to spite your face***. We don’t (yet ) have a full understanding of AmEx pop-up jail, cancelling a card within the first few months might be one of the things that lands one on the “Go To Jail” space****.

(* Juice: vigorish, vig; the fee charged by a bookmaker for accepting a gambler's wager, the cut a sportsbook keeps for taking your bet.)
(** Sock Drawer Card, or sock drawered: card placed in the sock drawer of a dresser after receiving SUB, never or rarely used again and cancelled, often prior to paying 2nd annual fee if applicable.)
(*** "Cutting off one's nose to spite one's face" is an expression used to describe a needlessly self-destructive overreaction to a problem.)
(****“Go To Jail” space: Monopoly board game circa early 1900’s)

The doc is dispensing solid advice here in his usual pleasant manner. At a minimum if you cancel the card before your first year is up it's almost certain to trigger a clawback of the sign-up bonus MR points. It was in the offer terms when you applied:

If we in our sole discretion determine that you have engaged in abuse, misuse, or gaming in connection with this offer in any way or that you intend to do so (for example, if you applied for one or more cards to obtain an offer(s) that we did not intend for you; if you cancel or downgrade your account within 12 months after acquiring it; or if you cancel or return purchases you made to meet the Threshold Amount), we may not credit, we may freeze, or we may take away Membership Rewards® points from your account. We may also cancel this Card account and other Card accounts you may have with us.

Just got the email from AMEX:
On your next renewal date on or after February 1, 2024, the Annual Fee for your Business Gold Card will increase from $295 to $375.

This strikes me as odd. As a business owner, 4x on shipping is a big reason this card appeals. Now, it seems as though the benefits are meant to appeal to consumers not business owners.

Earn 4X Membership Rewards® points on the 2 categories where your business spends the most each billing cycle from 6 categories:
  • Purchases at US media providers for advertising in select media (online, TV, radio)
  • U.S. purchases made from electronic goods retailers and software & cloud system providers
  • U.S. purchases at restaurants, including takeout and delivery
  • U.S. purchases at gas stations
  • Transit purchases including trains, taxicabs, rideshare services, ferries, tolls, parking, buses, and subways
  • Monthly wireless telephone service charges made directly from a wireless telephone service provider in the U.S.
Many of those are already covered by other cards. We do get 3x shipping on one of our Chase business cards so that's where we'll put our shipping charges.

Cell phone protection

How does the cell phone insurance for the Gold Buisiness compare to the Platinum Business?

I was going to kill all of my biz gold cards, but I'm going to wait and see if they revise this as the 4x shipping is the main reason I have this card The website shows all the new benefits, as well as the 4x shipping benefit so I will keep an eye on this. Anyone have any other cards that they recommend for shipping charge bonuses besides Chase Biz cards?

Grubhub, my go to place for office supplies 😅.

Why don’t they just keep the coupon book for themselves and sell me the SUB points for $375. No need to print a card for the drawer. Saves money and better for the environment.

Cell phone kinda sucks since almost every provider charges extra if you pay by credit card now.

I have never heard of this.

Just looked at my Verizon Wireless bill:

$74.03 with no fees for using a CC in the breakdown.

$74.03 charged on autopay to my AMEX Biz PLT.

I think they charge for one-time payments but with auto-pay on a CC I am not seeing any extra charge and never have.

That isn't what they are asking...

Biz Platinum says:

Cell Phone Protection

With Cell Phone Protection1, you can be reimbursed for your repair or replacement costs following damage or theft for a maximum of $800 per claim with a limit of 2 approved claims per 12-month period, when your cell phone line is listed on a wireless bill and the prior month's wireless bill was paid by an Eligible Card Account. A $50 deductible will apply to each approved claim. Additional terms and conditions apply.‡
Biz Gold says:

Cell Phone Protection

You can be reimbursed, the lesser of, your costs to repair or replace your damaged or stolen cell phone up to $800, subject to a $50 deductible, for 2 approved claims per 12-month period when your prior month's wireless bill was paid utilizing an Eligible Card Account. Terms and conditions apply.1
So its basically the same? Because its so hard to get the Wireless credit with AT&T (and yes, it is getting more expensive on the AT&T side to use a credit card but I'm not giving AT&T my bank account) on the Biz Platinum, I think I will cancel the Biz Platinum and use the Biz Gold

It's AT&T and T-Mobile for now- the autopay discounts don't work if your autopay is set to a credit card. I have no doubt this may eventually come to Verizon.
