Amex (Canada) points for Hotels

Firstly thanks for all the great work you guys do!

Not sure if I'm posting this in the right section of the forum. My question is with reference to the Canadian market.

I have a dilemma, I'm collecting Amex points but because of my job, my flights are mostly covered. All I want to use the Amex points is for Hotels.

Which of these portals gives me the best redemption value for my points when booking only Hotels?

1. Aeroplan
2. Amex Travel Portal
3. Hilton
4. Marriot

Thanks a lot!

Amex Travel Portal 0.7cpp for regular hotels
Hilton 0.4cpp
Marriott 0.8cpp
I would go for Aeroplan if you have Chase Aeroplan card. 1.25cpp when you redeem for Pay Yourself Back.

Schwab platinum is also a potential option. 1.1cpp cash out MR points.

I believe qba is asking about cards issued in Canada, not USA cards for hotel redemptions in Canada.

Thanks for the replies!, Taking into account that I have the Platinum card, I guess the previous reply still applies when it comes to the redeemable value the points in each portal.

So is just better to only move the points to Marriot's portal or just book hotels straight on Amex travel portal and don't transfer the points?

I think those values are based on the USA version of Membership Rewards and USD redemption rates.

It's straightforward to do your own research. Go to Amex travel and the various hotel chain websites, look for a property where you might actually stay, and compare the cost in money to the number of points required for the same room.

Thanks Mia! I could totally do that, but how do I know that my test won't be skewed by the fact that I'm picking outliers.

This is why I came here in case this was clearly known, so I can book my hotels moving forward based on what most people already knew.

Simple answer is always transfer points to Aeroplane , if your are holding Amex Canada card,

or you could just hold it as MR points and wait for any promotion in furture

In the first post qba explains that they do not need awards for air travel, but for hotels. Is Aeroplan still the best choice?

Thanks for the reply mikewei,

So transfer the points to Aeroplan and book hotels in the Air Canada Portal?

with my membership rewards points, i can pay eligible charges with my points at a rate of 100 pts for one dollar. $100 in hotel charge would be 10,000 pts.

if you transfer to marriott, you get 6 bonvoys for 5 MRs. value is hard to calculate since rates vary so much but i'm usually seeing about 0.8 canadian cents per point. so that would be about 0.9 canadian cents per MR point. i have seen transfer bonuses in the past so that would bump up the value 20-30%

hilton is a terrible exchange

i looked at hotels using aeroplan points but that didn't look very attractive either so i never pursued it.
